Gerard Way Talks About 'Umbrella Academy' Movie Wishlist

The Way Brothers have been getting a lot of press lately—both for their foray into the comic world and for bits and pieces on the progress of the next My Chemical Romance album. Gerard is already on his way to conquering the next medium, though, as he conceptualizes a movie adaptation of his comic, "The Umbrella Academy."

It's in the infancy stage, or rather, just a glimmer in Daddy's eye stage, but according to Paste Magazine, Way's dream team is Children of Men's Alfonso Cuarón, costume designer Colleen Atwood, a screenplay penned by Juno's Diablo Cody, and a soundtrack co-scored by RJ-D2 and himself.

This dream team has it's non-believers, though—says Buzznet movie buff Adam, "It's a horrible mash-up of wildly divergent talents.  Not only that but their styles don't mesh.  Diablo Cody writes fast back and forth quips in the vein of Kevin Smith and Gilmore Girls.  Cuaró has a high visual contrast style that focuses on humanity and (at times) eroticism."

To be fair, Juno was Diablo's first ever screenplay—we have to wait until 2009 to see her second feat, the comedy/horror flick, Jennifer's Body. Furthermore, just because these power-players have styles that appear to conflict, it doesn't mean they will. I'm not a rabid movie fan myself, but some of the strangest and most beautiful music mash-ups I've heard are the most unlikely combinations. (Jay-Z and The Beatles, anyone?)

I would give the kid, er, I mean the movie, a chance. But you have until 2010, at least, to warm up to the idea.

Thoughts?

Oh, and just for sh*ts and giggles:

Oh, Gerard. I was there when he did Umbrella. The whole crowd was like wtf...?"
I've heard a lot about this movie in various podcasts/interviews I find in various places. I'm so excited. Comic book movies are my favorite kind of movies. :D
I feel like the thing to keep in mind is that Diablo Cody's writing style would allow the dialog to stay snappy but mundane and a director like Cuaron would be able to set it all in a really messed up world. Which would fit the comic. I'd actually rather see Guillermo del Toro handle it, since his Hellboy films have been awesome, but I think Gerard's speculating about a team that would mix the mundane and the out-there.

Also, he dreams big. Remember the rumors about the video he'd dreamed up for House of Wolves? Gerard Way: not always the most rooted in reality.

Ha, I literally can't comprehend Cuaron and Cody working together. And I like both of them.

I'll wait to see the results first.

There are so many reasons why this movie should not exist for... oh, say, twenty years.

How about waiting for even THINKING about this until the series is actually over? And considering the fact that most comic books don't have big screen adaptations until they hit legend status...? Dude. Stop.

To put this simply, I think Gerard's doing what he always does; jumping into the swimming pool before it even has water in it, you could say. Yes, this works sometimes, but THIS is kind of ridiculous. He needs to slow it down, I say. A movie NOW would be a disaster.

Urgh. Not even back on tour and I want to knock his head into a brick wall...

I believe at MCR band practices this movie is referred to "Phase Three of Operation Global Domination". P3OGD for short.
I am interested in the other steps of this plan and demand you write a journal on the topic. Or else. I'll do something...um...something! Right.

I totally think a movie 4 this is a good idea! I love the series and it's time for some new heroes that aren't from Marvel (don't get me wrong I love them) or DC comics to get on the big screen. As Grant Morrison said, they're the heroes of the 21st century now.
