The Spike TV Scream Awards broadcast has come and gone, and so has the liveblog - so I figured I should probably give you a run down of the "real" Gerard Way news from the red carpet and beyond. Note: this is not about zombies or hair color.
IESB asked the MCR front man about The Umbrella Academy movie rumors. Gerard confirmed that his Dark Horse comic book series has indeed been optioned by Universal pictures. The film will be directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and the two are searching for screenwriters. They have also spoken to costume designer Colleen Atwood (Sweeny Todd) about jumping on board. The first meeting of the minds behind the flick has already occurred, and we can expect the feature film to hit theaters before 2010. Think you guys can wait that long??? Check out the video:
The Umbrella Academy Series 2 is in production, and the first issue will hit the shelves sometime this November. Get stoked!
Gerard told Comic Book Resources, “There’s going to be something next year I put out from Dark Horse that’s totally different from ‘Umbrella,’ I’m very excited about it. I’m working on it with another writer, I’m very excited about it.” He also said he hopes Gabriel Ba will climb on board with the aforementioned mystery project. Now I feel stupid for not asking him about The Black Rider. I really hope that's what he's up to. And could this "other writer" Gerard speaks of perhaps be the other Way brother?
Gabriel Ba, artist for The Umbrella Academy, took home the Scream Award for Best Comic Book Artist. The Umbrella Academy was also nominated for best comic book, along with worthy opponents, "Astonishing X-Men," "Hack/Slash," "League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier," "The Walking Dead," and "Y: The Last Man." The latter of these took home the Scream Award.
Apparently the "space pod" I referred to in my report about Gerard at the Screams was actually something called the "Owl Ship" from another thing called "The Watchmen." Since I have no idea what this stuff means, I was also told that referring to it as a "space pod" was acceptable. Anyway, Gerard did a segment during the show from inside the Owl Ship, which looks like this:
