dict.cc is seven years old today and finally, finally, finally, it's done: The dictionary has now officially been extended to other languages (public beta). 41 language pairs already exist and new ones can be added easily (there's a wish list for new languages).

At this point I'd like to say a deep-felt thank-you to all of the participants who have been working on building up basic vocabularies for the past months. You've been fantastic - thank you very, very much!

The home page of dict.cc now displays a box to the right of the page, enabling you to choose another language pair. Only vocabularies with a verification rate of 75% or more are displayed. You can help to bring up other languages there by following the review link here. To vote for correct entries it's sufficient to submit the review form unchanged - otherwise correct the fields directly and submit. Every entry has to be checked by several participants, so the system can tolerate an occasional error. Give it a try or just have a look at it!

Dict.cc is building dictionaries for more languages than english-german. There are already a few dictionaries for other languages than english-german. For example Icelandic-English.

I guess each English-'other language' contribution will also help to improve the German-'language' dictionary.

You can also upload audio-recordings. Audio-recordings are really helpful! Without them I would speak words like "consider" wrong. Although I'm writing a lot english, I'm not able to speak many of the words.

 

Idioms are always really helpful!

The only language I speak aside English and German, is a little bit French and only a few words Italian. As soon I can speak halfway French, I want to learn a Scandinavian language.

I hope  a few Finns, Norwegian and Swedish people will support dict.cc!

As many of you already know , I'm learning how to play the guitar , I've been to only 7 lessons ,, and today was my very first Recital , i was looking forward for this day for weeks , but when today finally came , i wished it hadn't ... Let me start at the begining

7:00 AM - woke up ,, and went to the doctors office for a blood test ... yeah i know , what a way to start ur day!!

8:00 - 13:00 - did absolutely nothing but study and listen to music

13:00 - took a shower

14:30 - Dressed in black from head to toe , carrying my guitar of my back , I put on my careless rockstar look , and the attitude to match , and went to rehearsal , the streets were empty , as if everyone knew the horrible things that were about to happen , and ran for thier lives , in attempt to distract myself from thinking about how much i'll screw up i listened to Unbound by Avenged Sevenfold [which is currently the theme song of my life].

15:00 - i finally arrived at the place where my Recital's going to be held at , and of course i was the first to get there

15:15 - some of the younger student started to arrive

15:30 - finally the teacher arrived

15:30 - 17:00 - rehearsal was rather uneventful and boring , talked a little bit to the other student and got to know them a little

17:00 - parents and friends started to arrive to watch the Recital.

17:15 - WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT US TO DO ? SIT ON STAGE ? OR SIT WITH THE AUDIENCE ?!!!

17:30 - Finally we started ,, first of all we all played the 9th symphony

17:35 - Solos

17:35 - 17:55 - damn these kids suck!

17:55 - oh crap! my turn ..

17:56 - I'm nervous , hope it doesnt show , i played Love me tender by Elvis , i started off okay ,, until ... OMG! I HIT THE WRONG STRING !!! WHAT SHOULD I DO ?!!! I glare at my guitar angrily , like it was it's fault why i hit the wrong string not mine .. but i pulled myself togther ,, finished off my solo , and got the hell off the stage!

18:00 - phew! the worst is over , now one more song and then i can hide under a rock

18:01 - we play a Jazz song ,, my playing was hardly noticable since the violens are too noisy and you can't hear anything else ..

18:15 - at last , i can go home

in short , Today kinda sucked ,, i wan't too bad compared to the other kids , specially that some of them have been learning for 2 years , but they still sucked , some of them were okat though .. i hope (??) to do this again ,, can't wait to learn more , sadly i have to wait like 4 months untill i can ...

hope i didn't bore u to death ... oh yeah and the timing might not be that accurate , but who cares ?

14.  Paul DiGiovanni
He's a nice guy I guess, kinda quiet but smart.  And we'll have a great escape!  We'll get drunk and drive around and make peace with an empty town.


13.  Paolo Valenciano
The reserved good looking Italian blooded vocalist of the Filipino band Salamin.  Theyre not quite in the mainstream thats why I dont know a great deal bout him except that he's a Beatles fan.  We'll just watch Across the universe and sing along to the movies soundtrack.



12.  Gabe Saporta
He might be a perv but he's the hottest perv alive!! We'l just have a dinner on that airbus, hotel in the air, that superhuge aircraft.  And hope there are no snakes on that plane.



11.  Jim Sturgess
This guy in all fairness could sing and could act and he looks to me as if he's dorky.  We'll go to the movies.  Thats just it.  Doing anything with this guy I suspect would be fun.




10.  Elrich and his Victorian stache
Seriously, aside from his sense of humor, I want to learn to ride the bike.  Lately I noticed most environmental advocates bike.  You know its a green thing so might as well learn to prove my determination to that cause.  I'll treat him to a dinner if he asks.
Note:  Skateboard is another option but I dont have sweet memories when it comes to boards.



9.  Ian Watkins
You know right away where's our venue, the rooftops of course!  But we wont stand there and scream our hearts out but we'll just sit there talk about anything while I hide the obviousness of how jaw drop I am about his Welsh eyes.  Its like stargazing but the brightest star is within my reach.  (aawh)



8.  Dave
My weed and cigar smoking alcoholic friend.  I'll just listen to his stupid philosophies, argue about Freud, sing Beatles songs, debate about Skidrow vs Incubus, bet about how many years Ely Buendia will still live all that and more over a frappe.  A reminiscence of our first meeting.

6 and 7.  Tim Bryan and Rex Vincent
My equally appealing brothers by heart(collective awws from JTX Tech Support).  We'll have pizza and laugh all day they always talk about doing it so maybe we'll just do that..or not..because we've been extremely busy lately.  This isnt this lists topper when rank based on possibility because we havent seen each other for quite sometime and besides they might opt to be each others date.



5.  Synyster Gates
I have an unholy confession, I love this guy.  We'll sieze the day by looking back at the two decades of guns n roses and sing along with Axl because I heard he's a fan.  I find Sin quite mysterious.



4.  Justin
he's like the ultimatest of all my altimate crushes.  Im hes stalker but I havent imagined nor I could bring my self to imagine us in a date.  If the impossible will finly happen maybe we will watch a hardcore underground concert and moshpit with the crowd.  And then he'll have beers.  Exchanging gossips bout our common friends wont be romantic but it wont be bad either.

3. Bill Beckett
Just so many girls will envy me.  I think he's a great guy maybe too pretty boy but he looks sweet.  We'll have dinner as long as there's cake afterwards because when you say William Beckett, I see cakes, maybe it has something to do with the Everything We Had vid or maybe he simply looks yummy.

He's going to sprinkle sparkles of sunshine on my day.  We're going to watch Smallville and gush over Tom Welling and his sexy jaw.  We will also have coke, for me and pepsi, for him.



1.  Brandon Boyd
Every Valentines I'm wishing he is with me.  We'll just walk on the shore hand in hand talking about each others life.  We'll just enjoy the faint darkness of the beach and the cold wind caressing us while diggin our toes into the sand.

Hello Buzznet =)  I hope you all had a lovely weekend, ate lots of scrummy food and had an all round awesome Thanksgiving! Being from the UK, I spent T-Day the same way I spend nearly every other Thursday - a packed day at uni where I constantly watch the clock and count down the hours until the weekend (YAY for no classes on Friday). So whilst America recovers from a day of thanks, turkeys, mashed potatoes and maaaasive parades and begins to gear up for the epic event that is Christmas, little old Scotland is having its own little celebration today, November 30th. So, I thought I'd bring a little international culture to this lovely site by inviting you to join in the annual celebration of St. Andrews Day, as well as bombaring you with useless facts about our bonnie country Enjoy!

• Its estimated that there are just over 5 million people living in Scotland, meaning we're smaller than London which has a population of around 7.5 million.  We're ickle.  We have around the same area of land mass as the US state of Maine, as well as some 790 outerlying islands - around 130 of which are populated.

• The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, which plays home to the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh Castle (surprise surprise) and Arthur's Seat (this big, fuck off hill that my friends try to drag me up every time I visit them). Whenever I got to Edinburgh it always seems to be super windy and very very cold.  It is rather lovely and it's the perfect place to go to buy something tartan - seriously, theres like a tourist/tartan shop on every corner!
  

• However Edinburgh is nowhere near as epic as the Mighty Glasgow (YAY!).  The largest city in Scotland, its my home during term time, filled with an eceltic range of people, millions of lovely shops for me to squander my student loan in, a vibrant and diverse nightlife as well as the worlds tallest cinema! This said cinema also has a glass elevator that goes up the outside of the building.  When I discovered this I had to ride it about six times in a row, pretending I was Charlie Bucket, until my friends threatened to rip up my ticket and make me stand outside the theatre whilst the film was on.  Spoilsports.  If you're ever going to come to Glasgow then bring an umbrella because it rains.  A lot.  Not that the umbrella will help in the slightest because the wind will rip it to shreds in seconds.  You'll feel prepared though =)
  

• Scotland has a devolved Government, which means we have a seperate law system from the rest of the UK, as well as our own policies on environment, education, prisons and health, with all the issues to do with economy, national security and forgein policy etc. reserved to the national government in Westminster, London. As of May 2007, the Scottish National Party (SNP) hold the largest number of seats in the Scottish Parliament, making our First Minister Mr. Alex Salmond.  Its all a bit mundane, but after studying politics for four years at school and then one (long and tedious) year at uni, I thought I'd better mention it =)  True facts - I once saw Alex Salmond speak at this conferance thing during my final year at school and he stopped his presentation to ask me to wake up my sleeping friends beside me.  It was all kinds of embarassing.  Another random fact - the Prime Minister for the whole of the UK, Gordon Brown, is also Scottish.
  

• As well as Scotland, the lovely Andrew is also the Patron Saint of Russia, Romania and Greece.  The white cross on the Scottish flag represents the saltire cross upon which Andrew was matyred on.  Apparently.  I've always been pretty rubbish with history.  Anyways, thats why the flag is often known as the saltire and can be seen flying from buildings all over the country.

• The national dish of Scotland is...HAGGIS!  I'm not going to go into details about how this originated because its pretty gross. Basically it involves sheep insides.  Despite its slightly questionable beginnings modern haggis are a lot more animal friendly with loads of vegitarian options now available.  YAY! Theres an urban myth that circles around the more gullible of us Scots, as well as many, many tourists, that haggis are actually a breed of animal, with one set of legs shorter than the other which aids them in running around hills and mountains.  Thats totally not something that I used to believe when I was little... *shifty eyes*  Anyway, tourist shops even sell noiseless whistles which are advertisted as aiding with haggis hunts and every April Fools day there's always a news story about how the haggis are facing extinction.  Anyways  haggis is best served with 'neeps' (turnips) and 'tatties' (potatoes) as well as a 'wee dram' (whisky).  The haggis is so awesome it even has its own little song - 'Address to the Haggis' which was written by Robert Burns and subsequentially the dish is typically eaten during Burns suppers.

• Burns suppers are held on Januray 25th - the birthday of Robert Burns, Scotlands National Bard.  My lil' cliam to fame is that Robert Burns actually spent his last few years of his life in Dumfries, a town which is only 6 miles from my house. It's the most exciting that thats ever happened in our town and this means everywhere you go there are pictures of his face leering down at you. We're so proud of him that my summer job involved telling tourists lots and lots of Burns related facts.  Anyways, as well as a song all about haggis Burns is perhaps most famous for his song 'Auld Lang Syne' which is sung at Hogmany (New Year) as well as A Red, Red Rose, A Man's A Man For A' Tha' and To A Mouse.  Lovely.

• About 1% of the Scottish population still speak the national language of Gaelic, with the majority of these people living in the Highlands and Islands.  I myself fail epically at Gaelic although I do know that the word of 'Scotland' in our native tongue is 'Alba'.  Fact.  There used to be this programme on TV when I was little that taught kids Gaelic and I watched it religiously, even though I had no clue what the people were saying.  I did try and find a YouTube clip but I couldn't.  Fail.  Anyways, heres a picture of a roadsign up in Oban that is written in both English and Gaelic.  Woo!

• We have a lot of lochs, which people sometimes called lakes.  They are not lakes.  They are lochs.  Anyway, the most famous of these is probably Loch Ness, home to the mythical Loch Ness Monster.  Did you know that the Scottish Protection of Animals Act (1912) actually protects this mythical creature from harm.  How awesome is that?  Mind you, there have been so many alledged sightings of Nessie that its impossible to totally deny her existence!  I like to think shes out there somewhere =)

• As well as Loch Ness, we also have Loch Lomond, which was made famous by the lovely band Runrig. This is played at any type of national events and is also a strong favourite amoungst pub and club DJs when it comes to closing time.  Why don't you have a listen?
