Jeff Hanneman wrote most of the album's content which has been described as SLAYER's most experimental disc. The album's title is a latin term for "The devil in music" or tritone; medieval musical rules did not allow this particular dissonance. According to one mythology, the interval was considered sexual and would bring out the devil; Tom Araya said that people were executed for writing and using the scale. Lyrical themes explored on the album include religion, deviants, death, maniacs, war, and serial killers...
The japanese version has two bonus tracks and a slightly different tracklisting:
- "Unguarded instinct" [03:44] (as track 08)...
- "Wicked" [06:03] (as track 12)...
"Wicked" is also on the australian version as track 11...
A double CD limited edition version of this album contains the japanese bonus track "Wicked" on the first disc, and the second disc is a bonus live CD with the following tracklisting:

03. "Mandatory suicide" [04:01]...
