QOTD: Why are people in the service industry treated so poorly?

The easy answer to this is, of course, that most people have never held a job in the service industry. But I don't think it's that simple.

Why are people like waiters and waitresses and those in retail jobs treated so poorly across the board? What can we do to change this?

We sell memberships where I work and people will let their memberships go and they end at the end of their term (6 or 12 months) and they call like three months down the road when they haven't been in for even longer adn they tell me they want to use one of their massages and I go "I'm sorry, you weren't on auto renew and so your pre-paids have expired".

And they explode. They scream and holler and they yell and they get angry and they tell me that they want them back and that they're never going to come here again.

And I go "It was in the Policies and Procedures hand book you recieved along with in the contract you signed. Also we explain it to you when you sign up."

And then they scream and holler some more. And I keep repeating myself.

The thing is, someone who's NICE to me about it "Oh man, it was wasn't it, is there ANYTHING I you can do?" I'm more likely to ask my owner if we can let it slide than someone who yells! DUH!!!

Please note that there is no sarcasm to be found anywhere in this post.

Oh, wait, there is some.

I'm confused. Do you actually mean that by choosing to work in the service industry we are asking to be treated like shit and therefore deserve it....or was that part of your comment the sarcastic part. I would love for you to clear this up for me, because I'm not sure whether I should be pissed off or not.

Shit, I'm sorry. It sounded more obvious in my head. I was being completely sarcastic, 100%. Of course it's not alright for people to be treated like crap because they work in the service industry, quite the contrary actually.
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, I by no means meant to offend anyone. :)
