QOTD: Has religion done more harm than good?

Oh boy. This should be fun.

Please read the thread. Please read people's responses. Please take the time to be considerate of other people's viewpoints. And if we get a troll, call on Alex and Shannon to picspam the hell out of them.

I think this has the possibility to be an interesting discussion if we don't allow this to turn into a personal war. Do you think religion (that means ALL religion, so please do not focus on just one) has done this world more harm or more good?

That is a delicate question. Please don't turn this into a "OMG I HATE CHRISTIANS" or a "OMG STUPID PAGAN HEATHENS" thread. This is not what this is about. Think about the benefits and consequences religion has had on our society.

I'm Catholic. There. That's out of the way.

To my experience, religion is good.

Religion gives me something to believe in. Even though I'm still not sure whether I really truly believe that God exists it is nice to have something or someone to turn to so I'm not just talking to myself hopelessly. It keeps me from giving up. (Oh, but I'm definitely not a sit-on-my-ass and wait for God to give me something, for the record.) It's psychological help, if nothing else. And "church" has been a good place for me to meet good people. I've met some of the best people through church youth group and whatnot. They are my biggest support group.

I also think that religions tend to produce some of the most wonderful people because of the lifestyle they promote. For example, I love my Mormon friends and I admire them so much for their ability to hold true to their moral higher ground. [Before you go saying "i know (insert religion here) people who are bad people! It's more likely than not that they aren't very good practicing (insert religon here)s and are going against what their religion teaches in that aspect. And if they claim to be good practitioners, then they're probably hypocrits]

As far as religion 'telling me what to do.' Personally, I like and try to follow the 10 commandments because I think that trying to follow them can only affect positively. It never hurts to not kill, not steal, not cheat, not lie, etc. Buuuut I'd say I look at them more like the pirates code. Guidelines, matey.

I think real problems are caused by religion when people try to impose their own beliefs upon others. When someone is "right" and someone is "wrong" and there's a dispute over it. In my eyes, religious war is really just Xtreme Bible Thumping.

In one part it reads, "thou shall not lie", but then again in another scripture God told Abraham to lie to the egyptians and say that his wife was his sister in order to be threated well. Soooo wtf is wrong here? To me the bible was written by a bunch of baboons who didn't have anything better to do!Watching from a neutral point of view, I see that people who are not 100% into religion live happier lives than those who are all about it.uhhh pretty sure God didnt tell Abraham to do that... Abraham did it cuz he thought the Egyptians would want to steal his wife from him and so-forth.. so he told them he was her bro... then the king took his wife yadda yadda.. and when the king found out... he was like.. dude why did you lie?unless im thinking of a different story... moving on. LOL
Yeah, ur right God didn't tell Abraham to lie, but nonetheless Abraham got "blessed" for lying. And the poor Egyptian that fell in love w/ Sara almost got zinched! lol

That's the way to do it! XD

It gives people something to believe in. I don't know about anyone else, but I need something to believe in, whatever that may be. Maybe it's me, maybe it's a higher power, who knows.
