QOTD: Is police brutality growing?

PanasonicYouth: 11/16/2006 11:09 AM
This is an incredibly relevant topic for today. Recently, video of alleged excessive force appeared on YouTube, causing an FBI investigation. Buzznet was contacted about the growing trend of civilians capturing law enforcement perhaps using too much force. And this morning, we've got video of the student being tasered on the UCLA campus for not having an ID.

Are more people capturing this type of content or is it actually growing? Do you feel the police are far too violent in their apprehension of suspects or do you believe it's a part of the job? I'm interested to hear your opinions.

That UCLA video clip almost made me cry. I'm not sure whether this type of behavior is growing or if it's simply being captured on video more frequently. I do however feel that the police have been way too violent in several apprehensions. If a suspect is lying limp with hands and feet sprawled out in front of them on the ground, how can the officers say that he was resisting arrest? This just doesn't make sense to me! And it makes me angry. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Just because you work FOR the law, it does NOT make you ABOVE the law.

Yeah. They use to throw 'Blanket Parties' too. That's where a vehicle (usually an unmarked van) rolls up, they jump out and throw a blanket over you to bag you up, then beat the hell out of you. The blanket keeps the victim from identifying their attacker.

In the last 6 months here in my town we have had 2 serious incidents of police being out of control and a mentally ill woman and a 16 year old boy are dead. The first incident the police were called because a mentally ill woman was yelling out a window and throwing things like clothes and things. She allegedly had a flare gun and was blasting music out the window. The police knew from neighbors that she was mentally ill and did not call in any help. The SWAT team eventually went in and allegedly saw her pointing the flare gun at them and so they shot her 8 times. She was asking for her meds. The 16 year old kid was a troubled kid, on probation and apparently broke that probation. The police got a tip and chased him into some woods and he was shot with an assualt rifle because he was carrying a knife and resisted arrest. I think that on some level, the cops are just not adequately trained to deal with some situations. My brother is Schizophrenic and sometimes has episodes where the police are called... I am just glad he doesn't live here in this town...

So why does this happen? Why do you think cops use so much force in situations in which it seems to be unnecessary?

I think it is a combination of many things. Adrenaline, fear, macho atittudes and very poor training. Some if it could also be that they just feel they are above the law since they enforce it. I get that they have incredibly dangerous jobs, but there has to be more psych screening and more training. There also need to be more options like rubber bullets. If the cops had used rubber bullets on that 16 year old kid I mentioned above, he'd still be alive AND he'd be in custody AND a cop wouldn't have a 16 year old's blood on his hands. There have to be better ways...

omg i just finished watching the clip . . . i cant even say anything to even describe what i saw . . . . everytime they tazed him, they kept shouting at him to get up! well dumbasses why dont you get taszed and then try to stand up! its not that easy. and then at the end, the guy that was in the students defense was being told to get back or he'd be tazed too! that is police brutality. thats just plain wrong. . . how can they, or how are they allowed to do something as horible as this? its just . . . so wrong. . . . should the police be arrested or something? are they still investigating on it, or are they gonna do anything about it? what happened to the guy?is he alright? how can something as little as a missing ID be so important, to bring in 3 or 4, or more tazers to someone? the police are given those tazers for a more dangerous situation, not a thing like missing ID. its not like the boy had a weapon of some sort, or he had a bomb waiting or something really important and dangerous, but no. he didnt have an ID. BIG DEAL! so what, thats no reason to taze the poor boy 5 or more times!

I feel that it is more likely a case of them getting caught using unnessasary force more often. Most police stations in the past (not sure about these days) always had a 'Back Room' where they took certain people to ' Cool Down'. You never realy wanted to visit to the ' Back Room' at a police station.
i agree

how can you say such a thing and still be a human being? that boy in the video suffered for no appropriate reason at the hands of the people who are supposed to protect us...how can you wish that on someone else?

you disgust me.

i don't care if what you said is a fucking joke...it's still horrible and undermines the pain the boy went through. go watch the video...get educated....come back and post. i want to see if you change your mind then....
