QOTD: Have you ever been the victim of a random act of violence?

Suggested by me because it's topical and I need to vent.

Maybe you've been the victim of vandalism. Perhaps a total stranger assaulted you. Has there ever been an incident in your life where someone you didn't know exhibited violence towards you for no apparent reason? Was the situation was resolved? How did it make you feel?

I wanted to post this because I was the victim of just such an attack this past Tuesday. I biked out to the Hollywood House of Blues to see Broadway Calls and Bad Religion. I left all of my stuff (laptop, bike stuff, messenger bag) back at the office so I wouldn't have anything to take into the show. I came out to my bike once the show was over to discover two flat tires. It was dark and late, so I just assumed some douche had thought it would be funny to let the air out of my tires.

After getting back to the office, I discovered that the tubes were actually flat and wouldn't take air. Bummed beyond belief, because I also had just used my last tube a couple days earlier, I realized I was stranded in Hollywood at 1:30am. Most of the bus lines (and the subway) didn't run anymore. I locked my bike up and ended up hailing a cab. (A note: Cabs in Hollywood refuse to stop and pick you up. What the fuck???) $21 later, I got home by 2:30.

Yesterday, after buying new tubes, I discovered two large slashes in the rear tire and one gigantic slash in the front tire. Someone had slashed my brand new Armadillos. (Let me tell you: Armadillos are fucking EXPENSIVE.)

I have no idea who did it or why.

A few weeks ago I was at a club and the dancefloor got to busy and hectic for me. So I was trying to get out of it and was making my way through when this guy just punched me in the face for no good reason. I was stood there stunned for at least a minute because it wasn't accidental. It was an intentional punch in the face. I got out of the dancefloor and I burst into tears. Stuff like that kinda upsets me not to mention it fucking hurts.

I couldn't find the guy again so I couldn't resolve it but my guy mates decided to build a barrier around me when I next got on the dancefloor

Oh my god, that's like this one time about eight years ago, me and my brother and my mom made snowmen and then my parents went out for awhile and when they got back all the snowmen on the street were knocked over. But that didn't discourage us, we went back out and rebuilt the snowmen and they were better than before. Haha.

But luckily I haven't been randomly harmed by anyone.

I write off random acts of violence as karma. It's a way to get at us back for a wrong that we have done, but will also end up biting the other person as well. =]

not violence but random vandalism that could have killed me

I've had my window smashed and somone took my purse outta my car (I know my purse shouldn't have been in my car, it's a super long story), and also someone broke into my house and basically "lived in it while I was out of town for a month (neighbors didn't call the cops, how awesome is that?), they ended up stealing my X-box, and eating my food....and wearing my clothes, weird. So while, I've never had anything done to me "physically" I felt pretty fucking violated, both times. Just the thought of someone that you don't know being in a place that you consider your personal sanctuary, it's wierd.

Wow Mark... I am VERY sorry that this happened to you.

I have never experienced such a thing ~knock on wood~... I hope I never do--- that would be scary I think. I would always wonder---okay... was it REALLY just random--- or does somebody that I don't know... know me..................... understand?

OK, RANDOM violence, right?
When I was in High School, I used to get stuff thrown at me all the time, Papers and trash and stuff. I once had a dead bird thrown at me.
Once, I went to a club with some college friends, and my friend's car's trunk was forced open, with all our notebooks and school stuff in it.NOTHING of monetary value! Why do people steal notebooks? Is there really a great black market demand for used notebooks?
Then. after moving here to Mexico City, I got mugged in a taxi cab. I took a taxi with a friend, he got off near his house, which is on the way for me, and once we got in front of my building, another guy got in, held a gun to me, threatened me, groped me, took my credit card and money, my book bag and school supplies (again, I ask, WHY?). They dropped me off somewhere I didn't recognize. Weirdly, I wasn't scared. I was shaking and furious, especially when, on reflection, I realized the taxi driver was probably in on it.

I'm a big freedom of choice advocate so when I was still at community college I wrote alot about controversies over the freedom of sexuality, religion, and gender and racial slander on Long Island in my school paper. so I was well know for my beliefs in print. I left my car parked there while I went on an a daytrip to Boston one day and when we got back at like 2 or 3am I found someone wrote alot of bullshit about different religions, sexuality, and races all over my hubcabs in bright sharpies. I was SO pissed and reported it the next morning to campus security. Obviously they never found the person, but I got a parking pass to park in the teachers lot on the center of campus.

and I wrote about the whole thing for the following week's column
