QOTD: How much do you tip at restaurants?

When you go out to eat, how much do you generally tip the waiter or waitress? Do you have a specific number you choose or is it based on how well you were served? Do you think tipping should stay in place or should service jobs be paid normal wages?

Well, actually... in New Zealand we don't tend to 'tip' the waiter/waitress as much.

If people don't do it, it's completely acceptable.
But there are people who do it.

I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job

No, sorry, I just had to haha, that's mean ^^

10% always, I think it's a law in here, or so I've been told, I don't go to restaurants that often anyway.

Depends on the service & if I'm on holiday or not.

If I'm on holiday between 20-10%.

When I'm not on holiday between 15-5% or sometimes I just give them the change.

Yep, I'm cheap.

Anywhere between 0%-20%. If it's bad then it's acceptable to leave a smiley face made of pennies. If it's great, and not just good then 20%. 15% is accepted standard and should be, since some places just pay wait staff exactly what taxes collect so they get nothing but tips as pay.

Oh ok. Are the wages normal there?

Yeah, I tip atleast 15% and I've almost never tipped below that, even if someone makes a mistake. I generally tip between 20-25% all the time.

Usually 10 % or $2 whichever is greater. If the service is bad I do not leave a tip. I've been to restaurants which automatically adds a tip to the tab, I really don't agree w/ that. I feel that a tip is a type of reward in appreciation for a good service. I also went to this Spanish restaurant out of town where the son of a b**** tipped himself 25% of my tab out of my debit card, which wasn't cheap considering I was paying for myself and three others and the restaurant was a nice one, but that's beside the point. =)

I tip quite a bit. I guess more than 15%. My ex husband would get so mad if we went to Sonic and I tipped the car hops. He would say " This is fast food. You don't tip". But they do carry the food to you. I guess! I can see his point. But mine was who cares. It's like a couple of dollars.

If you are rude I will still tip. But not much. And mistakes sometimes are not their fault. So I wouldn't count it against 'em!

i usually tip $2 no matter what! unless i know the waiter/waitress than up to $5 but when i'm with my friend who is a waitress herself she usually makes us tip at least 10%! but i always tip even at sonics! but i think they should get paid normal wages, the friend i mentioned above always complains about how little she makes in tips one night and then the buttload she make the next night! it's unbalanced!
