Summertime Sadness [Oneshot PREVIEW]

Hello all! Sorry it took so long for me to get some writing up on this beezy. My break was much crazier than expected! Here is a little preview of my new oneshot, let me know what you think!

The fields were as yellow as they had ever been that summer. As she looked across the mid-august sky, streaked with splashes of gold and pink, she could feel the sweat tickle the hair on the back of her neck, reminding her of the never-ending heat of California.

They both lay stretched out on the hood of his old blue pick-up truck, listening to the sound of crickets began to mix with the sound of the distant rising tide as the sky slowly began to transform.

He simply let out a long breath, she turned her head to look at him: watching as his chocolate-brown eyes scanned the sky, his dark eyebrows furrowed as his jaw clenched as he swallowed hard.

She could only focus on how his eyes closed as he ran his fingers through his dark tousled hair.

“I leave September second,” he broke their silence, feeling his own throat tighten. He only wanted to keep his cool, and tell her casually. Looking at her meant that he could see how his words would register in her head, with the potential of changing the expression on her face with sadness. Maybe if he acted like it wasn’t a big problem…she would see it the same.

She could only nod, not wanting the tears that were threatening to form and fall upon her cheeks, exposing her. He did not look at her. He simply held her hand, continuing to let his eyes dance across the sky, looking for stars that were beginning to appear in the ever-darkening sky.
