Dakotah's Pov: Josh asked me to be his sidekick in taking down A. He asked me when I told him about the letter that Zac had received from A. I only agreed because of A hurting Hayley and trying to break Zac and I up. Again. We agreed not to tell anyone especially not Hayley and Cass because they would both disagree and may even try to stop us. We can't have our only chance of taking down A, to be stopped by them. We have to do this. For everyone. I gulped in a nervous breath as I got a text from Josh.
"Dakotah hurry yo ass up! I'm outside, waiting."
I quickly texted him back and ran down the stairs, swinging my keys in my hand. Just as I open the door there's Cass standing on my porch.
"Hey have you got a second?" She asks hopefully. I glance down at the time. I was already late enough as it is.
"Uh Cass this is kind of a bad time." I mumbled trying to politely tell her to leave.
"Please? It will only take a sec." She says, not taking no for an answer.
"How about tomorrow?" I say closing my door behind me. "I'm kind of in a hurry."
She eyes me up and down "Where are you going?"
"Uh there's just something I need to take care of." I say pushing past her. "Tomorrow night I promise."
"It can't wait Dakotah." She spat grabbing my hand.
"I think I have feelings for two people." She admits looking down at the ground.
I place my hands on her shoulders. "Who?"
"This guy I've been hanging out with recently. But I really like Taylor as well and I'm kind of stuck. I just need some girl advice and Hayley's in hospital and I just need you Dak." She hugs me tightly. I sigh and rub her back.
"Look Cass. I think you should spend some more time with Taylor. You need to bond more, your always ditching him."
She nods and hugs me again. "Thank you." She whispered with a small smile.
I returned the smile but it quickly vanished. "I really have to go now look I will see you tomorrow." I say running down my porch and unlocking my car. She waves to me as I drive off.
Sorry Josh.
I speed down the dark gravel road that winds down to the greenhouse. Suddenly someone runs out in front of my car causing me to almost hit them. I slam my foot down on the brakes hearing my car screech to a halt. I glance up scared that I might have hit someone. The figure was wearing a black hoodie with a creamy colored mask on. They had a small object in their hand. That's when I realized. It was A. I jumped out of the car as the figure ran into the forest. I chased after them panting trying to keep up as I tumbled through the trees. I really have to start working out. I stopped instantly in my tracks as I remembered that Josh was meant to be here too. Where was he? I stopped my pursue after A and ran back through the clearing and into the greenhouse.
"Josh?" I called and opened the backdoor. I could barely see anything; the only light was the moonlight. I carefully stepped around a wooden table to find his unconscious body on the ground.
"Josh!" I gasped running to his aid. I touched his wound and blood poured out onto my shaking hands.
"Holy fucking shit" I whispered trying to take in what was happening. I always say that one phrase when I'm extremely nervous.
I felt for a pulse on his neck. There was a pulse, it was small but at least he was still alive.
"Holy fucking shit" I repeated as I lifted his head off the ground.
He had a gash on the back of his head too. I could feel my stomach churning at the sight of all this blood.
Suddenly Zac tumbled through the door in a black hoodie. I looked at him with fear in my eyes. He was holding a bloody knife in his right hand. "You?" I trembled. He glanced down at the knife then back at me.
"No I found this in the forest." He explained, putting it on the table.
"Why were you in the forest?" I questioned cautiously.
He didn't look at me, he just ran to Josh's aid.
"Call an ambulance now!" He shouted, ripping off the end of his shirt and wrapping it around Josh's waist.
I felt in my pocket for my phone but it wasn't there. "I left it in the car!" My voice shook.
He looked me quickly before scooping up Josh's body.
"We have to get him to the hospital." He rushed carrying Josh out the door. He ran with Josh in his arms and lay him down in the backseat.
"Drive Dakotah!" He screamed as Josh lost more blood.
My hands were rapidly shaking as I turned on the engine and backed out of the driveway, then speeding to the hospital. When we arrived Zac ran him into the emergency unit but I didn't follow. Instead I staggered over to the wall and lent down, puking out my breakfast, lunch and dinner. I was never good around blood and I was never good at keeping my cussing to a minimum.
"Shit" I mumbled leaning against the wall.
The uneasy feeling in my stomach wasn't leaving to quickly. I inhaled a deep breath as I tried to process everything that had happened tonight. Only three words popped into my head.
"Holy fucken shit."
Hayley's Pov: I was watching a crappy television show in my hospital bed when the nurse led in Dakotah. I was confused at first because visiting hours were well over. Dakotah ran to my side with tears welling in her eyes. She hugged me tightly and whispered "Sorry" Over and over again. I pulled away from her and asked her what was going on. She explained everything, from the plan with A to Josh being stabbed. I yanked off my covers and dove out of bed, running to the door. I ran down the white corridor searching for Josh. I could feel hot tears streaming down my face as I ran to the emergency ward. A nurse sat me down and told me that I couldn't go any further because he was in intensive care. I didn't care though. Josh was dying. My Josh was dying.
"Please Mam you will see him in the morning." She assured although she didn't seem too certain.
I turned around to see Cass, Taylor and the whole of Josh's family burst through the doors. His Mother tried to push past the nurse. She was screaming "That's my son!" Over and over again. His siblings had tears streaming down their faces and his Father was trying to calm everyone down. I ran over to Izy and hugged her tightly. She buried her head into my shoulder and sobbed. I cried too. If I had known that he was going there I would have done everything to stop him. I continued to cry because I knew that most of the reason he had gone was for me. To stand up for me. Now he was injured. And it's my fault.
The nurse couldn't handle us all so she sat us down on the waiting room chairs. I sobbed quietly feeling my eyes drooping. I just wanted to sleep. Sleep and wake up to know this was all just a sick dream. I lay my head down on the chair as I felt the last of my tears stream down my red cheeks. Dakotah came over to me and wrapped her arms around me comfortingly. I rested on her, feeling her comb her fingers through my hair. I just needed Josh to be ok. Please.
I awoke to find a ray of sunshine hitting me in my eyes. I lifted my hand to my forehead and turned over about to go back to sleep when I remembered about Josh. I sat up realizing that I was put back into my hospital bed. Dakotah and Cass were crashed out on the two chairs beside my bed. I gently kicked off the blankets and crept out of the room, trying to not awake them. I then broke out into a run down the corridor, my feet slapping the cold ground. I ran until I made it to the emergency room door. I was about to open it when a nurse grabbed my hand.
"He's awake love, but I don't think you should go in there."
"What? I have to! I have to see him." I fought opening the door. His family was in there. They all turned their heads to me.
Mrs. Farro's eyes widened. "Hayley please come in."
The nurse stopped me again. "I don't think he will be able to just yet" She warned.
Mrs. Farro waved a hand at her. “He will be fine.”
I was so confused about their small conversation. The nurse sighed in defeat and led me into the room. I stepped into the cold white room as my eye trained on Josh’s wounded body. I made eye contact with Josh but he didn’t smile at me. Instead he tilted his head to the side, it’s like he was struggling to focus on me. Suddenly he said something that made my heart drop.
"Who are you?"
