Chapter Six: The Boy with the Promise

Kennedy's face was eager. His face was shocked. His face was sad. His face was anything but happy. I had hurt the boy whom I promised I wouldn't.

Silly, how a grade school promise could hold such a meaning.

We had just gotten home from school, Pat playing basketball in the front yard. But Kennedy and I we went inside grabbed our two oreos and ran back outside and to the park that was only across the street. He grabbed my hand and pulled me up the slide before we hopped into the tunnel. Giggling and out of breathe, we twist our oreos so one side was full of the white cream and the other was just the cookie itself. Kennedy frowning because his oreo broke in half, I handed him my oreo with the cream filled side and grinned at him.

"Here have mine!" I say, "I'll show you." I grabbed my second one and he grabbed his second one, he put his hands like mine were and watched me twist. The cream on one-side and the cookie on the other. He smiles and twist his cookie. Happy he hands me his cream-filled side and I bite into it, grinning.

"Amazy Macy! Amazy Macy!" Kennedy chanted.

"Kennedy." I say and turn so I was facing him. Kennedy was staring at Garrett, his eyebrows furrowed.

"Macy." He says quietly, "Your dad's back home. He wanted me over for a BBQ."

"Kennedy." I say even quieter. Hoping that he'd hear the tone in my voice.

"Don't, Macy." He says and brushes past me and past Garrett.

I looked at Garrett, barely seeing him now. My eyes filling with tears. I quickly wipe them away and walk past him but not before I hear him say, "Your lips. They taste like Dr.Pepper."

"Macy! Wanna hang out today at the park?" Kennedy grins at me and I shake my head and frown at him.

"Jaime says you were making fun of me!" I say and push him and pass him running away.

Climbing the slide was difficult without Kennedy's help but I made it all the way to the top and hid in the tunnel. Not long did Kennedy find me, though. I turned away from him and crossed my hands across my chest making a 'Hmppph' sound.

"Amazy Macy?" Kennedy says softly

"I don't wanna be your friend anymore!" I say and stick my tongue out at him. He frowns and throws his hands in the air.

"Jaime is jealous! I wouldn't make fun of you!"

"Why would she be jealous, Kennedy! Stop lying." I frown but he shakes his head.

"I'm not, I'm not!" he cries out, "She's  jealous because I like you better than I like her!"

"You like me better than her?" I say turning towards him and he nods eagerly.

"Can I tell you a secret?"

I nod happily, I loved secrets.

"Promise not to tell no one. Not even our parents or Pat?"

"Cross my heart!" I say inching closer towards him.

His cheeks turned red and he grinned at me. "Can I tell you?"

"Now!" I say, giggling.

"I like-like you, Macy. You're pretty and you share your cookies with me!"

I grin, "Promise!?"

"Cross my heart!" He smiles and wraps his arms around me and I do the same.

"I think you're 'uppose to kiss me now." I say quietly and he looks at me for a second. "But only if you're not gonna hurt me! Daddy says guys aren't suppose to hurt girls!"

"I won't ever, ever, ever hurt you, Amazy Macy!" He says and pulls out a little plastic ring and puts it on my ring finger before bending in and kissing my cheek. We both blushed and held hands in the tunnel before our Mom's called us back for supper.

He's kept that promise. Never to hurt me. I don't even think he remembers that day. Or maybe I just dreamt that it happened, but in actualality it didn't. But, it did. I have the plastic ring to prove it.

But now, it was I, who is the bad guy. I hurt Kennedy.

"Macy! Come down for supper!"

"I'm not hungry!" I called down from my room.

I heard a chair slide across the floor and steps come up the stairs. I frowned when I saw him. But all he did was smile at me and sit on my bed grabbing my feet.

"Hey, baby bear."

"Hey mama-bear." I say sadly but smile at our nicknames.

"What's wrong?"

"Can you hurt someone without even knowing or trying?" I ask and Mama comes and sits beside me on my bed.

"Why do you ask?"

"I think I might've hurt Kenny." I say sadly, "But I didn't mean to. I didn't want it to happen."

Garrett popped into my mind. His face. His lips on my lips sent tingles down my body.

He was already aggravating me.

"Kennedy loves you with all his heart. If you did. He'd tell you."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Smiling, we both went downstairs. A smiling Kennedy welcomed me in the chair beside him, a juicy chicken breast barbequed by dad himself with a pile of salad sitting on my plate looked delicious. I eagerly ate and tried to ignore the presence of the person who was sitting across from me.
