REVIEW: Fall Out Boy - 'Save Rock and Roll'

‘Save Rock and Roll’ hasn’t been released yet but there’s already an abundance of reviews – from journalists and fans, in-print and online. With a controversial title, albeit one intended ironically, the critical debate doesn’t look set to wane anytime soon. In fact, “This has been said so many times that I’m not sure if it matters” but if you can handle reading another, here goes.
One of the most surprising elements of ‘Save Rock and Roll’ is its lack of surprise. This album is undoubtedly different from the Fall Out Boy we knew pre-hiatus, but there’s a disappointing lack of variation between the 11 tracks themselves. Although the three songs premiered as teasers (‘My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark’, ‘The Phoenix’, ‘Young Volcanoes’) were all distinctly different from each other, ‘Save Rock and Roll’ doesn’t push the boundaries any further. With cameos from Courtney Love, Big Sean, Foxes and Elton John, this album could have been daringly experimental and eclectic but it halts its ambition before creating a masterpiece.
Although the album is a brave and bold effort for Fall Out Boy, as a rock band, it’s still a safe bet commercially. There are times when ‘Save Rock and Roll’ plays like a pastiche of today’s popular music. The opening to ‘The Phoenix’ is an immediate reminder of Plan B’s ‘Ill Manors’ and the Foxes duet ‘Just One Yesterday’, which is otherwise faultless, begins by sounding like a cover of Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’. There are less obvious pop homages too as even the embrace of electric guitars in ‘Death Valley’ doesn’t stop it sounding like a punk David Guetta, and the stripped-back nature of ‘Young Volcanoes’ plays on the popularity of acoustic singer-songwriters such as Ed Sheeran.
However to accuse Fall Out Boy of ‘selling out’ would not only be wrong, but deeply unfair. This was the album that Fall Out Boy wanted to make – and they made it. Recorded in secret, ‘Save Rock and Roll’ wasn’t a product of pressure from the industry. This is a real and raw album, even though it doesn’t sound like one. Normally when a band step away from the spotlight to do something different, we expect their return to be shocking, polarising and frankly, a little bit weird. ‘Save Rock and Roll’ is none of those things, but that’s ok – even if it will disappoint some.
‘Save Rock and Roll’ still remains uniquely Fall Out Boy – even though it sounds predominantly Patrick Stump. Although the collaborative process behind the album saw guitarist Joe Trohman contribute to the song-writing, his metal influence is surprisingly absent. Some may have expected Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley’s time in The Damned Things to be reflected 2013’s Fall Out Boy, but their rock roots are not even referenced. However, the solo work of Patrick Stump, and Pete Wentz’s dance side project Black Cards have clearly had an influence – conscious or otherwise. Several songs, such as ‘Miss Missing You’ and ‘Alone Together’, feel like they were meant for Stump’s follow-up to ‘Soul Punk’ but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
‘Save Rock and Roll’ may not be the genre-defying Fall Out Boy-defining album that it could have been –but it’s still good. For an album so short, it’s still guilty of a couple of fillers – although which songs are the weakest is still debatable. The only unanimous opinion from fans and critics alike is that Stump’s voice is better than ever. Even when coupled with Elton John on the title track, Stump still impresses. ‘Save Rock and Roll’, as a song, is an epic ballad which will long be considered one of Fall Out Boy’s best songs, regardless of how many more albums they make. The album is book-ended brilliantly by ‘The Phoenix’ and ‘Save Rock and Roll’, and there are several more instances of beauty but there are also less memorable moments.
‘Save Rock and Roll’ won’t be hated by Fall Out Boy fans, but it might not be loved at first listen either. It takes longer to ‘click’ because it’s different, but perhaps it’s not different enough. However, if this is just the beginning of a new era of Fall Out Boy, it’s a very exciting introduction.
What do you think of 'Save Rock and Roll'?

Like, THE ONE. I first wanted to show a picture of Pierre Bouvier I took a while ago, on which he smiles at me, and he's so cute, but this picture of me with all Fall Out Boy members talks much. This band... This band actually saved me. When I didn't feel I could get on life, I listened to them, over and over again. When they announced their hiatus, I can't tell how I felt... It was like some people who helped me–without even knowing it–left my life. I never stopped believing in their comeback. I knew, somewhere in my bones, that it wasn't over. And, even if it was, they were here, and that's the best thing. My first concert was Fall Out Boy. My first CDs were Fall Out Boy. When I was 18, I got my first tattoo. One year and half later, when I raised enough money, I got the phrase "Believers Never Die" tattooed on my wrist. And now, in February and April 2013, I've seen them live again, talked to them twice. 90% of the people I know are thanks of Fall Out Boy.
So, yeah, this picture of me, with my idols, from when I was 14, 15, is my favorite picture ever. Thank you Fall Out Boy, and see you in August in Paris.

Fall Out Boy have quashed rumours that the album artwork for 'Save Rock and Roll' had leaked by unveiling its real, and far more interesting, cover.
The band revealed via their Tumblr that their comeback album with feature the artwork of photographer Roger Stonehouse who captured a punk and a monk holding hands in Burma.
The image struck up a strong connection with Fall Out Boy during the recording process and is said to illustrate the album's message.
Explaining their choice of artwork, Fall Out Boy wrote:
"when we were beginning the journey of making this record we wanted to find some inspirational images. we came across the punk and monk image on the Internet and it really solidified what we were trying to get across on the record- the idea of old and new clashing. tradition and change coming together. there was something striking about it. obviously this is an image that means a lot to many people- we felt like we wanted to be part of this conversation. these kids represent the youth, change and irreverence that we hope our record is listened to with. at the end of the day we just want to take the rules and start all over with save rock and roll anyway. shout out to Roger Stonehouse for capturing the original photo and allowing us to share it with the world [sic]"
Earlier in March, various music sites had reported that the album cover had been leaked after a white image with simply the words 'Fall Out Boy' appeared online on some pre-order websites. However, this has since been disregarded as a template image.

Do you like Fall Out Boy's official artwork for 'Save Rock and Roll', or did you prefer the rumoured simplistic image?

Like many other Fall Out Boy fans, I didn’t get to see the band’s first post-hiatus appearance in the UK at The Underworld in London. I was gutted, yes, but I wasn’t surprised. I didn’t really expect to get to the event but I naively believed I had the same chance of getting one of the 500 tickets as everyone else. I’ve since discovered that I was wrong. I predicted a bun fight for tickets, but I didn’t imagine a war – and one that true fans would lose in favour of influential industry figures. With the risk of sounding hypocritical, I write this from the point of view of both a Fall Out Boy diehard and a music blogger.
The controversy surrounding FOB’s London show is no longer about the disgrace of it selling out in seconds (minutes before the date was scheduled to go on sale), its suspicious last-minute removal from all ticketing agencies other than See Tickets, or even the fact that another band were ousted from their own gig at The Underworld when Fall Out Boy publicly announced a double-booked date, without any confirmation from the venue. Instead, the controversy soon became about who got tickets for the gig. However, this came from curiosity, not jealousy. Unlucky fans began to wonder why so few, if any, of their friends – online or in real life – were attending the gig and decided to investigate. Any who conducted a quick Twitter search for ticket holders soon found a long list of industry workers, ‘friends of friends of Fall Out Boy’, journalists and musical peers. It became very hard to find an ‘ordinary’ fan, leading to a rumour that 100 of the tickets had been allocated to a guest-list instead. Perhaps, this was a coincidence? As confirmed by the venue, the truth was worse.
In a tweet sent to me earlier today, The Underworld venue revealed that at least 250 of the already rare tickets were given to so-called ‘insiders’. According to the venue’s official Twitter, “fall out boy sold half the tickets to fans on see tickets and the other half they gave to media [sic]”. Interesting, and sure to irritate a large number of fans. While the mention of “the media” explains the disproportionate number of Fall Out Boy fans attending who write about music for a living (I’m aware of the irony), it will still mystify many fans. It also doesn’t explain the appearances of some so-called ‘VIPs’. Did You Me At Six really purchase their tickets, like ordinary fans? It’s highly improbable. They too were almost certainly on the ever-expanding guest-list.
Perhaps, it’s fair to say that I wouldn’t be writing this if I’d been lucky enough to attend the gig – either as a fan, or a reviewer. That’s a fair comment and I recognise that I’d have probably been so consumed in the hysteria that I would have forgotten about those left out. Although I hope that I still would have recognised that the absurdly large guest-list is unfair. How can a ratio of 50/50 of ‘people in the know’ versus the general public be justified? While I understand that a reunion show will demand a large amount of press coverage and I respect them for recognising both the big magazines and small blogs (apart from this one, a-hem), I struggle to see why they willingly butter up scenesters and taste-makers when they claim to be saving rock and roll. The success of their comeback single should have told them that they didn’t need to win people over with free tickets to the hottest gig in London town, because the hype was already there – without the industry circus.
The fact is that whilst getting tickets to see Fall Out Boy in one of their club shows was always going to be like finding the golden ticket, it’s insulting for so many diehards to know that there are people attending the gig for no other reason than it being yet another industry freebie. Do Fall Out Boy even know that half of their crowd are really there on business, and if they do, do they think it’s fair? (Feel free to answer that one, FOB).
How is using a one-off gig as a networking event going to save rock and roll? (I can answer that one for you, FOB – it won’t!).
This was billed as a special one-off show for fans, but it was anything but. For the 250 ticket buyers, it was a dream come true but for the rest for us on the outside looking in, it’s been a nightmare.

In celebration of Surviving the FOB Hiatus, the band played small club shows in Chicago, NY and last night LA. I feel so incredibly blessed I was able to watch my favorite band back in action at The Roxy in Hollywood. It was definitely a night to remember. Check my photos from the show :) You are the dreamer & we are the dream. Save Rock & Roll. 20130208084623

Fall Out Boy surprised fans on Monday February 4th, when the band took to falloutboyrock.com and shared the news of a new single with a video, new record coming soon and a full US tour this spring!

Why Fall Out Boy WILL Save Rock and Roll

Fall Out Boy's return has been rumoured for weeks thanks to a plethora of music writers jumping on the reunion bandwagon (guilty!). 2013 marks ten years since the release of their major label debut 'Take This To Your Grave' so an anniversary tour seemed imminent and logical - for everyone except Fall Out Boy, that is.Although fans were prepared for an announcement after an 'insider' article from No Country For Nashville went viral across Tumblr and Twitter, FOB's loyal followers were still not prepared for just how new their new announcement would be. Releasing a brand new song entitled 'My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up)' and tour dates worldwide and a pre-order for an album proves that Fall Out Boy are still one step - or perhaps, a mile - ahead.Their comeback album's modest title 'Save Rock and Roll' is already causing controversy, especially given the un-rock and roll sound of its first radio single - but doesn't that make it even more 'Rock and Roll'? While the rest of rock and roll's supposed saviors busy away their lives with pathetic arguments about whether guitar music is dead or not (Clue: It's not, move on), Fall Out Boy are embracing the genre's true ethos with experimentation. A genre needs to evolve to stay alive, and that is exactly what Fall Out Boy are doing. Similarly, when lead singer Patrick Stump branched with his solo album 'Soul Punk', his use of synths and pop beats was far more 'punk' than him writing 'From Under The Cork Tree - Part II'.There's no doubt that amongst the hype and hysteria of Fall Out Boy's return, there will be a few confused fans who crave their rock music to sound like, well, rock which 'MSKWYDITD (LEU)' doesn't offer but the emphasis is on the 'few'. Those who are miffed by a 2 Chainz cameo would have already deserted Fall Out Boy - before Jay-Z intro'd 'Infinity On High', before 50 Cent opened for them on tour, before Lil' Wayne, Debbie Harry, Elvis Costello et al all guested on the eclectic 'Folie à Deux' AKA a long time ago. Perhaps, the haze of the hiatus has caused some to forget that Fall Out Boy were always about pushing forward, rather than re-living their 'glory days'.However, the mood their latest release creates suggests that they are not only refusing to repeat the past, but are actually erasing it. While Fall Out Boy's previously self-referential videos remembered the music of yesteryear through rose-tinted glasses (as seen in 'Thnks Fr Th Mmrs' and 'What A Catch, Donnie'), their latest offering may leave some with pangs of sadness as the band's past is set alight. As everything from the Fall Out Toy Works comic books to their vinyl records burn, it's easy to see why some see this as a goodbye to the past . The latter is particularly painful for all those who just forked out $23 at Hot Topic for a re-pressing of 'From Under The Cork Tree'.To view this video as a 'fond farewell' would be a mistake (they've only just returned!!!). This is not the end, this is a new beginning. Fall Out Boy are not dead, but they have been born again. There's no need to put 'Take This To Your Grave' on your bonfire, but there's also no reason to not press 'Pause' while you experience what Fall Out Boy sound like in 2013, not 2003.Roll 'n' Roll will be saved, but only by embracing change. 'Light 'Em Up's video may seem to closer to 'Run This Town' than anything produced by Fall Out Boy's immediate peers, but it's good to know that Fall Out Boy are back - and they're back at the forefront.
World, meet your saviors of rock 'n' roll - they're called Fall Out Boy ....... and they're new.
Here's to the kids who are not afraid of change.

What do you think of Fall Out Boy's new direction?
