Dir En Grey are one of the most influential rock/metal acts to emerge from Japan. Their style has changed a lot since they formed in 1997, varying from their starting base of alt rock, to metal and rock, Visual Kei to progressive rock.
The band is made up of singer Kyo, guitarists Karou and Die, bassist Toshiya and drummer Shinya. The band was formed from the previous band, La:Sadie. They formed in early February 1997, and immediatley got to work, releasing their ‘Missa’ EP a few months after they had formed. Since then, they have released 7 studio albums, the most recent being ‘Uroboros’, which was released in November of 2008. Their other releses include Gauze, Macabre, Kisou, Vulgar, Withering To Death and The Marrow Of A Bone.
Dir En Grey have toured a lot, covering the continents of Asia, North America and Europe, including being on the bill for 2009’s Kerrang! Tour along with Mindless Self Indulgence, Bring Me The Horizon, In Case Of Fire and Black Tide. I myself went to the Glasgow date, and I have to say their set was amazing, they played so many songs and didn’t let the language barrier bring their set down.
If your looking for some new music, and don’t mind a different language in it, then I highly recommend Dir En Grey. With impressive vocals, amazing guitars and thumping bass and drum beats, they will blow your mind.
