Panic(!) at the Disco
Ryan Ross and Spencer Smith surely never thought that playing Blink-182 covers would eventually lead them to worldwide tours. In 2004 the two met up with Brent Wilson and Trevor Howell, to form the band The Summer League. The four were still in high school when Brent began looking for a replacement for Trevor. Palo Verde High School is where he found that replacement, in the form of Brendon Urie. He quickly went from guitarist to lead singer. Along with a change of band positions, the guys changed the name. They settled on Panic! at the Disco. After establishing a name and permanent members, the boys contacted Pete Wentz through LiveJournal, linking him to their PureVolume site. Wentz liked it so much he flew to Las Vegas to meet with them and sit through one of their band practices. The rest is history. Pete signed them to his sublabel of Fueld By Ramen; Decaydance. In 2005, Panic! at the Disco released A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. I Write Sins Not Tragedies proved to be the hit from this album by winning music video of the year at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2006. The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage and There's A Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey. You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet are my personal favorites from the album. During this time they toured with such people as The Academy Is..., The Hush Sound, and OK Go. They also lost bassist Brent Wilson. Jon Walker was added as a temporary bassist, but on July 3rd of 2006, he was made a permanent member, and Panic! at the Disco was done with changes, or so we thought. From the years 2006-2008 there was not much activity from Panic!. They had a few videos come out but not much new music. In mid December of 2007, Panic! had a set date for the new album. Nine In The Afternoon was the first single from this long expected album. On January 9th, Panic! at the Disco had some upset fans. The band announced they had decided to drop the "!". Finally on March 25, 2008, Panic at the Disco, released Pretty. Odd. The new album had a completely different style than A Fever You Can't Sweat Out, and the fans were torn between love and hate. July 06, 2009 was a very sad day for Panic and Panic! fans alike. The boys took a spilt. I awoke that Monday morning to read that one of my favorite bands was over, or that's how it looks from the outside. But not all hope is lost. Ryan Ross and Jon Walker took a peaceful leave to make their own band; while Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith would remain Panic! at the Disco, reinstating the "!". The Ryan and Jon collaboration would further be known as The Young Veins. Is it the end of Panic! as we knew it forever? I have no idea. Either way, it's not too late to become a fan. Their music pushed limits, just like their videos. These guys left no lines uncrossed. I expect just as much from them no matter who they're making their music with.
