November 26, 2009Daily Music Dose: Weatherbox
Weatherbox are a stoner rock band that was spawned in the early days of 2005 in the city of San Diego where Brian Warren, lead, would get high whenever he could. They are signed to the respectable Doghouse Records - home to The Getup Kids, Say Anything and The All-American Rejects. They have released two full-length albums, American Art and their newest since September, The Cosmic Drama. Warren is now the only member of the band at present, but he continues to play live shows with a dynamic cast of musicians. Warren has stated that his influences are Say Anything, Criteria and Cursive yet has been known to change his warped mind often. One song I must mention is Trippin’ the Life Fantastic which is about how the world really was formed. It mention’s Darwin’s Theory of Evolution , “I was born in a swamp/I was born with no clothes on”. They are heavily opinionated lyrics which show Warren believing that God did not create the world we live on; “This god of your holy books I do not agree with him” and “To return to god, dispenser of judgmental pencil shavings/He’s got baggies full for you/ But I’ve got a planet packed with proof”. Weatherbox may not be a well-known band but in years to come, will be one of the most influential bands in the alternative music scene.

About American Art: “Buy this record with confidence; champion it with conviction; memorize it with dedication. But most importantly, love it unquestionably-it will change your life if you let it.” – Scott Heisel, Alternative Press Music Editor Related Groups:

Counting Crows
I have known about this group for several years. However, I never really gave them a serious try until a few months ago and at first I thought they were kind of bland (I know, not a good thing to say in a write up), but something about their lyrics and how different they were to me drew me in and I am now in crazy about them as I hope you will be.
These gentlemen create some of the best music I’ve heard in a while. Their lyrics are beautiful and their lead singer has dread locks [a wonderful reason to give them a try, all else aside].
Counting Crows formed in San Francisco in 1991 by Adam Duritz (vocals) and Dave Bryson (guitar). However, they began gain popularity in ’93 and sky-rocketed with the release of their debut album “August and Everything After” which soon became the fastest selling album since Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. They continued to become more and more popular with the release of the albums following “August and Everything After” (“Recovering Satellites”, “This Desert Life”, and “Hard Candy”).

November 23, 2009Daily Music Dose: Operator Please
Operator Please are an indie, edgy pop band from the Gold Coast, here in Australia. They consist of a vocalist, guitarist, drummer, keyboardist, bassist and oddly enough, violinist. They formed in high school in 2005, in order to win their school’s “Battle of the Bands” competition – which they won. After their limited success, they continued their band and independently producing two EPs; On the Prowl and Cement Cement. They signed to Virgin/EMI Records in Australia within months of having one of their songs on heavy rotation on Australian radio network, Triple J. They’ve released one album, Yes Yes Vindictive in 2007, which peaked at #5 on iTunes. Their most popular song, Just a Song about Ping Pong, won Operator Please “Best Breakthrough Artist” in 2007 at the Aria Awards. Ping Pong was aired not only in Australia but the UK and Europe. Perez Hilton had labelled them “The next big thing” and “Our favourite new band”. They’ve played many festivals like the Reeding and Leads Festivals (UK), Big Day Out (Australia), Splendour in the Grass (Australia) and Homebake (Australia) to name a few. However, they weren’t greatly perceived at 2007’s Big Day Out, which featured music from Tool to Lilly Allen. Since their last single was released, there has been no sign of Operator Please but on their Myspace, it’s stated that they’ve just finished recording an awaited second album.

Daily Music Dose: The Mission District
Hailing from that wonderful country that goes by the name of Canada, The Mission District are definitely set to become something big. Combining impossibly catchy choruses with infectious riffs, you can’t help but jump around when listening to them. The band has toured with the likes of Saving Aimee, The Bravery and most recently, Elliot Minor. I was lucky enough to go and see them support Elliot Minor in June, and I must say, I have never seen a support band get the crowd going as well as them. Within minutes the whole venue was bouncing, and David got the crowd involved so well that my friend, who knew none of the words, was singing along. I was actually sad to see them leave the stage. The band are on a headline tour this month, so if you want to check them out live, then i highly suggest you go for it! The Mission District are, in my opinion, well worth the 5 minutes it’ll take to check them out. You’ll never regret it.
