Because I have not yet figured out a way to be in two places at once (and because truthfully I hate the outdoors), I was unable to attend Bonnaroo this year. I didn't let this stop me from getting a detailed recap. Bonnaroo has been written about a million times before, so I thought it would be interesting to write about this years festival from the point of view of someone attending for the very first time.
It was harder than I thought to find someone who had never gone before. But through the wonders of hashtags and social networking (stalking), I tracked down 21 year old James Simon, and he agreed to give me all the details of losing his Bonnaroo cherry.
Based on his Facebook, his interests include playing outside, mountains & lakes, music and injuring himself.
Keep reading to find out what James thought about Bonnaroo!
Was this your first time attending Bonnaroo?
Yes it was my first time. I didn't know what to expect going there. I had heard a bunch of stories but it exceeded anything I could have imagined.
What acts were you most excited to see? Did they live up to your expectations?
I was most excited to see Paul McCartney. That was the biggest show in America if not the world on Friday and he was amazing. Easily the greatest show I have ever been to. Anyone that wasn't there should be jealous that we got to see Paul...that is insane! I'll never see a bigger artist. Never.
Describe the atmosphere.
The atmosphere was amazing. Over 100,000 people live in lawless harmony for 4 days with minimal security but I still felt safe. Everyone was there to enjoy themselves the overall atmosphere of all of bonnaroo greatly reflected that.
Anything interesting happen?
Mumford and Sons cancelled and Jack Johnson took their place. He was great. [Read more about Mumford and Son's cancelled tour here]
Were you disappointed or let down by any of the performances?
No one really bad that I can remember. I was excited about ZZ Top but they kind of let me down.
Besides Paul I loved Pretty Lights. He put on the second greatest show at Bonnaroo. See the DJs. Doesn't matter if they play at 2 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning, that's where the parties are guaranteed to be.
If you could give advice to someone that has never been, what would you say?
Advice is pack light and bring a fan. Those tents get hot as hell when you're trying to sleep. Stay hydrated, everyone knows its a four day drug and alcohol festival and I saw a lot of people being carried out by friends or staff because they didn't drink enough water. There is water everywhere, drink it.
Did you discover any new music you think others should know about?
Sheepdogs were great, Alt-J was a lot of fun. Don't go there and just listen to the headliners I discovered more new music than I can name.
