May 22, 2009The Dream BandDo you play fantasy baseball or basketball? Yeah I know you dont. So anyway 'the dream band' is like 'the dream team' of USA basketball. Okay. Enough of my sports analogies. I picked one among the vast sea of rock gods that the world had ever heard play and formed the ultimate band. Its not that because theyre the best or theyre my fav but because they are capable of immersing with each others sound. On vocals and rhythm.
James Hetfield(Metallica). His deep and diverse voice is legendary. I like the fact that he could even sing ballads like Nothing Else Matters. And he's not that bad(of course thats an understatement) on guitars(his balance and prescission) and songwriting.
On lead.
Jimmy Page(Led Zeppelin). The creativity and originality of his riffs stamped his name into the iconic status. He could replicate any other guitarists out there and I think thats a huge something that contributes to any bands harmony.
On bass.
John "Thunderfingers"Entwistle(The Who). His aggressive leads became very influencial to other preceeding guitarists. He is a huge part of the distinctive sound of The Who.
On drums.
Chad Smith(Red Hot Chilli Peppers) Simply because he eats drums for breakfast!LOL. Seriously though, his drumming is simple but really clean with very addictive beats. Plus he is a great improviser. I dont know if you could picture them playing along with each other *chokes myself* but I actually cant though somehow there's a voice in my head that says that they'll rock it out with each other. Thoughts? How bout you who are your picks?
PS: yeah idea stolen from the master himself, Gab.

March 15, 2009Time Trippin and Gettin High
Who is the better songwriter? Bob Dylan or John Lennon?
![]() While you are weighing the greatness of these two legends, my friends let me take you down to Strawberry Fields err memory lane. Long ago when man is still living in the remnants of world war II, a Swiss chemist conceived what he did not expect to be a hallucinogenic drug. He took some for himself and eureka! the first ever LSD high known to man is recorded. Our friends over at Wikipedia said that the effects of it are, in all quotes verbatim "Some psychological effects may include an experience of radiant colors, objects and surfaces appearing to ripple or "breathe," colored patterns behind the eyes, a sense of time distorting (time seems to be stretching, repeating itself, changing speed or stopping), crawling geometric patterns overlaying walls and other objects, morphing objects, a sense that one's thoughts are spiraling into themselves, loss of a sense of identity or the ego (known as "ego death"), and powerful, and sometimes brutal, psycho-physical reactions interpreted by some users as reliving their own birth. Many users experience a dissolution between themselves and the "outside world".This unitive quality may play a role in the spiritual and religious aspects of LSD. The drug sometimes leads to disintegration or restructuring of the user's historical personality and creates a mental state that some users report allows them to have more choice regarding the nature of their own personality." And it is being use for medical purposes and for art projects. Art projects epecially rock musicians. What exactly is rock music? No I dont want to give a genre description to it because I dont want an uproar of disagreement for we all know since its berth its scope had been disputed. Anyway I'll just bravely declare that the greatest rock bands of all time are The Beatles for creating a vast theme on rock songs; Led Zeppelin for revolutionizing the sound of rock; The Who for the fiery stage performances; The Rolling Stones for if we dont have them we surely wont have Aerosmith and the likes and The Jimi Hendrix Experience for giving us Jimi Hendrix. If they did not exist probably we will be stuck in a world of guys chanting about how flashy their blings are. Thanks to them we had Panic! At The Disco, Oasis, Greenday, Fall Out Boy and the list of their obviously influenced band goes on. Their music lives on not only in the hearts of their living hardcore fans but also in the younger generation. Rock as they say is the music of the philosophically gifted and it has definitely altered how generations behaved. It would only take a poet like Bob Dylan to put into words the greatness of rock music. The heyday of rock music, the popularity of LSD and the height of the youth's idealism for freedom mix them all and you get an intensified era of creativity, revolution, greatness and acid rock. Acid rock or psychedellic rock is a form of rock music in reference to LSD, acid being the slang for LSD and psychedellic being the term coined describing LSD's effects. It can also connote music recorded under the influence of LSD or intended to be experienced in conjunction with LSD. These associations can be a matter of the musicians intention, the listeners intention or even just a general perception of the person using the term. The lyrics often deals with drug induced psychological themes as well as references to mind altering techniques often characterized by offbeat style, vivid imagery and sometimes musical or sound effects. Acid rock contains that hypnotic groove that the musician singing it and the listener can "get lost" within a song. Get trippin with some of the high-ly listened acid songs: Purple Daze- The Jimi Hendrix Experience Progressive Acid- Pink Floyd Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds- The Beatles Light My Fire- The Doors Brain Damage- Pink Floyd We might not have LSD today(though we still have cannabis) but we still have the music almost similar to the effects of any drug meant to alter mental states. Well as someone I cant remember said it before "music is a safe type of high" thats what we have today and in some ways I could say thats the edge of our generations rock music over the past sex and drugs rock music. Although I could also say that the discovery of LSD is certainly one of the defining moments of rock music. Going back to the best songwriter, I'd vote for Bob Dylan. How bout you?

All Hope Is Gone.
Bleurgh, I'm finally blogging the show to get it out of the way, and so Jackie will stop nagging me. As many of you have probably gauged from the updates and my endless babbling, I went and saw Slipknot last Friday for their Australian leg of the All Hope Is Gone '08 tour. Much creaming and glory was to be had, and I'm still feeling the effects of it days later.
After an extremely short train ride that entailed me likening public transport infrastructure to animals, Jackie, Michael and I arrived outside Brisbane Riverstage and lined up in anticipation of Slipknot. To cut a long story short, the few hours between our arrival and the opening of the gates were fucking boring as hale, so I'll spare you guys the agony of having to read about it. By the time gates opened and we all made the mad dash inside the venue, my friend Peta and I got separated from Jackie and Michael, and just so happened to take up a spot front and centre on the barrier. ![]() Observe the pig-nosed 'before' portrait. Lawlz @ that chick in the background. I hadn't heard anything about a local support band before showing up at the venue, and to be honest, when I found out the band was Sydonia my expectations were pretty low. I vaguely remember them having added me on MySpace at one point, posting a few bulletins that caught my attention, and that was it. But dude, I was totally fucking impressed. Performing in front of the Machine Head backdrop, the Melbourne boys performed like they were the headliners. As is usually the case with local bands, the microphones and vocals didn't do them justice, but I did hear some amazing growling thrown in there. They had a really odd set-up, with the bass player occasionally playing drums, and having several drummers onstage at a time, but it definitely worked in their favour. It was interesting, but they were a bit overshadowed by Slipknot vocalist and guitarist Corey Taylor and Jim Root being sighted side of stage during the set. ![]() Soon after the Sydonia boys toddled off, the guys from Machine Head burst on stage, practically pissing themselves in anticipation. This was the second time I'd seen them in a little over a year, and to be honest I wasn't that impressed with them last time I saw them. Robb Flynn is like the quintessential hot metalhead guy, although at Black Crusade last year I distinctly remember his vocals being incredibly off and sounding akin to a dying seagull. I don't know whether there was a glorious group masturbation session before the show or what, but whatever he's doing, it's working. If the immense amount of crowdsurfers kicking me in the head and accidentally pulling out clumps of hair hadn't impeded my ability to jizz, I totally would have creamed myself over the Machine Head set. They were energetic, angry, occasionally humourous, and having some of Robb Flynn's alcohol sprayed on me was a definite highlight. I managed to get some pretty good shots of the guys, and one of the bonus points about excessive amounts of crowd surfers is that security don't have time to shit bricks over your flash photography. ;] ![]() OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG SLIPKNOT. Immediately after the Machine Head set ended, black curtains fell from the roof to obscure the stage, and this is when the mosh started to get really crazy. I can tolerate obscene amounts of rib crushing, elbows in the back, hairpulling and hell - you can even take a piss behind me in the mosh and I'll be fine, but the mosh started to get really fucking intense. By the time Jim Root came out on stage and leered at us menacingly, I was curled over the barrier, with my spine curved in a most unnatural position. I lasted perhaps a song or two in the pit before needing to be pulled out, and I floated it and out of consciousness whilst being pulled from the mosh and dragged to the medic tent. AND OH MY GOD MY PANTS BROKE. So I was dizzy, sore and flashing my panties at everybody. Luckily I only sat in the medic tent for a song or two (I distinctly remember hearing Before I Forget being played as people came and collapsed in the tent, and then I toddled out to witness the rest of the song. Dude, if ever there were a time to describe a show as intense, this was it. Even if you disregard the fucking mental mosh altogether, the show was fucking intense and extravagant. Slipknot emerged on stage to a circus-like backdrop, with Joey wearing prosthetics that made his hands seem like long gnarled twigs - a perfect accompaniment to his crown of thorns or whatever the fuck it is. The circus backdrop was accompanied by pyrotechnics, with towers of fire shooting into the air occasionally, or the set being enhanced by mini explosions which caused me to nearly shit in my broken pants. The backdrop was then replaced with an All Hope Is Gone tour backdrop, in celebration of the latest album. This multiple backdrop bsns that I witnessed previously at Disturbed kind of has me disturbed (lawlz I'm such a master of the English language), and I was even more disturbed and excited when a third backdrop was pulled onstage, this time simply displaying the word 'Slipknot' in that iconic font. But dude, the extravagant stage show didn't end there, most of the time I was fixated on Clown's hydraulic drumkit, which extended upward, spun around, and even had video cameras on it to tape the crowd. This was only outdone by Joey Jordison's drumkit which rose up, and turned at a 90 degree angle so he was drumming upside down. @_@ I was a bit disappointed that they played so little from Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses, because that album was pure fucking awesome, but I seriously creamed myself so many times anyway that it didn't matter. Their setlist included Surfacing, Before I Forget (idk if there was a song between there, I was probably unconscious), Duality, All Hope Is Gone, Psychosocial, Dead Memories, Prosthetics, (sic), Spit it Out, and another noteworthy mention was the utterly traumatising random song they played after the set, whilst Chris Fehn threw drumsticks out into the crowd. I'd have really loved to have seen them play Vermillion or Wait & Bleed, but whatevs. ![]() After-show! Again with the pignose LOL. But my teeth look good, despite the hordes of pimples. I left the venue feeling really fucking happy with myself, although wishing I could have seen them again and again and again and again and...well you get the idea. With countless injuries, good friends and 4 official tour shirts in tow, Friday night made for a very happy Jerry. :] -- Toodles, Jerry Related Groups:
