I listen to a LOT of music... some music is forgetable while some you CANNOT GET OUT OF YOUR DAMN HEAD!!!! Some songs you turn off because they're so bad (ahem, Justin Bieber?) and some that you turn up louder because you cannot believe what is coming out of your speakers... for example DIE ANTWOORD. I was there several years ago when we first heard Die Antwoord and saw their music videos. I was right there with you when our jaws dropped and we said, "What the hell did I just watch?" Except I, probably unlike some of you, went back and searched for every music video they had on YouTube.
Die Antwoord pronounced DEE-ANTWURD is Yo-Landi Vi$$er, Ninja and DJ- Hi Tek, a group of rappers from Cape Town, South Africa. Formed in 2008, Die Antwoord draws their inspiration from Zef Culture described as "modern and trashy." Performing their lyrics in their native tounges of Afrikaans, Xhosa (and also English), Die Antwoord was a shock to the music scene of America. Ninja describes their music as being designed for "shock value."
In 2009 the music video for "Evil Boy" was released, garnering Die Antwoord a large American following. Also with the release of the video, they signed a record deal with Interscope records, leading to performances at Coachella, Big Day Out, and a 2010 myspace award of Best New Music Video for "Enter The Ninja."
In late 2011, Die Antwoord left the Interscope, citing that they were asked to make their music "more generic" to make more money. They began their own record label, Zef Recordz, and released their latest album, Ten$ion. Yo-Landi Vi$$er had this to say on the matter:
If you try to make songs that other people like, your band will always be shit. You always gotta do what you like. If it connects, it's a miracle, but it happened with Die Antwoord.
- Yo-Landi Vi$$er
Be on the lookout for the release of new Die Antwoord feature films. There is one called "Wat Kyk Jy," that debuted at SXSW and is available online. Whether you like Die Antwoord or not, their sound is undeniable unique. If you are listening to them for the first time, check out the videos below and let me know what you think!
This video is a little weird (and also the EXPLICIT version) so you might not want to watch... say... work? Or in front of your parents!
This video I REALLY would NOT watch in public... that is unless you like strange looks from the people sitting next to you...
