Do You Want The New Fashion Trend, Big Toe Shoes? They’re $1,000

The new fashion trend is a "big toe shoe," in which only the big toe sticks out.

Yes, big toe shoes are the new big thing in fashion. The style, created by the Parisian fashion label Y Project, costs around £790. That's almost $1,000 for heeled shoes that don't cover the big toe.

Despite receiving a lot of mockery from internet users, these shoes are rapidly selling out. They first appeared in Y Project's 2018 Spring/Summer collection. Since then, their popularity has only grown. According to the Daily Mail, Y Project plans to feature them on the runway later in 2019.

According to Refinery 29, the style links back to the late 1980s. In 1988, Maison Margiela showed off a closed-toe Tabi boot as part of the Martin Margiela show. The boots, which appeared in Vogue, were a re-interpretation of traditional Japanese split-toe socks. These are the socks which have a slit near the big toe, so people can wear them with sandals.

Recently, Y Project has resurrected the Martin Margiela look and converted it into heeled shoes.

The fashion brand Celine also has a version of this shoe. They're called Pirate Leather Sandals, and some do the exact opposite: they cover the big toe, and don't conceal the other toes. Colloquially, some people call them "peep toes."

Regardless of how many people call this trend "ugly," it seems like it's here to stay. For the rest of 2019, at least.
