Demi Lovato Reveals Why She Doesn’t Have A Celebrity Squad

“Squad” may be the most overused and tired word of the moment, but for all intents and purposes it’s what everyone is still using when referring to a crew like Taylor Swift‘s A-list crew of celebrity BFFs.

While it seems everyone in Tinseltown is either part of Taylor’s exclusive crew, or have their own version of it, Demi Lovato isn’t subscribing to the limelight squad trend. Sitting down recently with Complex, Demi opened up about the importance of friendships in her life and why her crew isn’t famous.

“I don’t really hang out with celebrities,” she shares. “I guess I do sometimes. I like Hailee Steinfeld. And Nick [Jonas]. But I don’t count Nick and Joe [Jonas] as celebrities. I’ve grown up with them. I’m not the type of person that’s on Instagram posting pictures of me and tons of my best friends. I have my core group, and they’re the type of people that will be there for me in the middle of the night. They’re the type of people that are like, “You’re being a bitch right now. Don’t talk to me that way,” and I’m like, “Whoa. Sorry. I didn’t realize it.” I don’t have anybody around me who kisses my ass.”

Turns out, Demi likes to keep things very real. Which is why, when it comes to bringing another famous face into her circle they have to be awesome and far from being fake, like her BFF Iggy Azalea.

“She’s so awesome. She’s very, very, very real,” Demi says. “What you see is what you get. I think sometimes that pushes people away, but that’s what I admire about her. She’s the furthest thing from fake. In this entertainment business, that’s so hard to find with anybody. That’s why I don’t have any very famous friends. The very few that I do have are real.”

So while Demi isn’t exactly calling anyone specific out, I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing her chillin’ at Taylor’s next slumber party.

What do you think of Demi’s attitude toward celebrity friends?
