Exclusive: Dev Talks New EP, Honey Dip & Working With Kreayshawn!

As you may know Dev is not only a singer and songwriter but the girl can rap! We were lucky enough to sit down with her and talk to her about her new EP ‘Bittersweet July pt. 2‘. We are stoked to see she has some tours in the work for 2015 so keep an eye out for her in a city near you!

Your new EP ‘Bittersweet July pt. 2’ just came out. What was your inspiration behind it?

Bittersweet July PT 1 was a little more pop inspired, all of the songs were about love and we’re very vulnerable so I knew I wanted to balance those records out with Pt 2 being very sexy, a little dark, and more electronic driven. I put a lot of attitude into pt2, it was very freeing.

Why did you decide to split ‘Bittersweet July’ into two?

It wasn’t on purpose actually. I have always wanted to release an EP in two parts but I really didn’t think it would happen just yet. Right after releasing pt1 my friend Nanosaur and I kept the creative vibes going and put together the skeleton of pt2 in about a week. We continued working on the songs until we felt comfortable, but it was a very natural process. We were so happy with the songs we came up with that we wanted to share them. That’s kind of how pt2 came about.

How was working with Kreayshawn on the video for your hit “Honey Dip”?

It was awesome! It was so fun to finally collaborate with her. Kreay and I have known each other for about 5 years now and really never had the opportunity to work together so it was really fun to be able to out together such a personal and pretty visual for ‘honeydip’.

Your new album is coming out next year, what can you tell your fans about it?

I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m really excited for 2015 🙂

What are some of the biggest differences between your new album and your last?

I think I have certain stylistic aspects that will always be ‘me’ but now being a mother, a fiancé, an independent artist, I’m stronger, tougher, I love harder & I think I’m more passionate. I’m just an intensified version of my 2011/2012 self haha oh no!!

What has your songwriting process been like for your new album?

Very free. I’d rewrite, rework, start all over if I felt like it. There wasn’t pressure from a label, just pressure from myself mainly haha but that was plenty. The past two years were filled with so much emotion for me, very up and down. I knew I wanted records that carried those emotions. Sad songs and sassy songs. My friends Nanosaur, Mndr, and Campa were so great at keeping me inspired when I needed a good push. And my fans are fucking great I wanted them to be happy.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My family. Robyn. Lykke Li. Karen O. Katy Perry. The Bby G00NZ.

If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be?

That changes. But I always love Robyn. I look up to her so much and Nicki Minaj. Her play on words is really rad.

Any tours in the works?

Yes! Let’s just say if everything goes as planned, 2015 is going to be fun!
