Zac Efron Opens Up About Addiction, His New Sober Life, & Kendrick Lamar In New Interview

The young “High School Musical” star, Zac Efron, is in the middle of a career comeback! It seems the public is extremely excited about his new movie “Neighbors” and we hope that the movie will be a big summer hit!

Unfortunately time in the spotlight hasn’t always been the easiest for Efron, whose journey was almost derailed by alcohol and drug addiction.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, April 30, Efron opened up about his substance abuse and his decision to get help. In the cover story, Zac stated that he joined the Alcoholics Anonymous and that it ultimately changed his life for the better!

“I just started going,” Efron said about AA, adding that he also sees a therapist. “And I think it’s changed my life. I’m much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now.”

Being in the spotlight is definitely a much more difficult task than it seems to the public eye. His addictions were the result of his deliberate isolation from friends and family. He hid behind his work, lived out of a suitcase, and eventually turned to substance abuse to escape it all.

“I was just so deep into my work. It was really the only thing I had,” he said. “I clung to it in a way that became a little bit destructive.”

It took much bravery and strength for Efron to enter rehab last spring, although shortly after he caught wind from the press after his altercation with a homeless man. He states that the fight was the “most terrifying moment in my life.”

Fortunately, this incident didn’t throw Efron off of his path to recovery. Efron focused on self-edification through working out to keep his body tight, reading books, and listening to all types of music, especially that of Grammy-nominated rapper Kendrick Lamar.

“I try to stay as low-key as possible,” he said. “I’m on Spotify 24/7. Kendrick Lamar and his album good kid, m.A.A.d city is one of the coolest things I’ve ever heard.”

As for his battle with addiction, Efron admits that it’s always a work-in-progress.

“It’s a never-ending struggle,” he said.
