WIN A Copy Of ‘Vampire Academy’!

It’s been a while since vampires were the current hotness in pop-culture, but with the February 7, release of Vampire Academy just a few days away, we caught up with author Richelle Mead to find out why this new franchise is about to take over the teen world and beyond!

For those that haven’t read the series, how would you explain it’s different from Twilight, Vampire Diaries, etc.?   Vampire Academy is based on a Romanian myth I came across, about how there are two races of vampires in the world: the Moroi (living, benign vampires who don’t kill for blood) and the Strigoi (evil, undead vampires who are akin to our more common ideas of vampires).  Between them are the dhampirs, half-vampires who in legend acted as Strigoi hunters.  In my series, I’ve created a whole society within our world for the Moroi, with a royal hierarchy and complex social system. There are moments that make you laugh, some that make you cry, and some that have you biting your nails.

What was it like on-set?  What was the chemistry like between the actors?

My set visit was amazing.  It was two days, and I wish I could’ve seen more!  The actors have incredible chemistry.  Even off the set, you can see it in the way they interact with each other on social media.   They all got along and had such a wonderful rapport, which is so key in a story like this, which is focused around relationships and the way people connect with each other.  Equally amazing was how much everyone seemed to love what they were doing.  It meant the world to me that this project, based on my book, brought them such joy.

Out of all the characters you created, which is your favorite and why?

I can never answer this question!  It’s like choosing children.  They all offer something wonderful and unique to write.  Rose’s attitude and wit are always fun, and Lissa’s soulfulness and dark edge provide a great counterbalance.  Christian’s sharp comments, Dimitri’s stoicism and bravery…they all have something I love.
