Today In Awesome: Sinead O’ Connor’s Open Letters To Miley Cyrus

Sinead O’ Connor is currently doing that one thing that a majority of us wish we could do. That “thing” is called talking some sense to Miley Cyrus. Miley’s latest round of photos snapped by Terry Richardson has us all wondering if we are watching a train wreck or witnessing something so miraculous that it’s true nature would make our brains melt.

Miley Cyrus

Sinead O’ Connor, for those of you who don’t know, is an Irish singer/songwriter who came to prominence in the early 90s for her cover of Prince‘s “Nothing Compairs 2 U.” She is also known for being rather outspoken when it comes to issues of women’s rights, organized religion, child abuse, and war. She is amazing.

Yesterday, O’ Connor penned an open later which stated concern for Miley Cyrus via her Facebook. The letter, which is rather frank is chock full of knowledge and advice that only O’ Connor could dispense, caused Miley to send out a series of tweets which mocked O’ Connor’s mental health issues:

My favorite portion of yesterday’s open letter was this:

“I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way ‘cool’ to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted … its so not cool Miley … its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. We aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers. That they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career.”

To me, O’ Connor seemed to have genuine concern for the recent actions of Miley Cyrus. While the language in O’ Connor’s letter was expletive filled and strong, I do feel that it was all written in the hopes that Miley would seek help and not become sexualized by the industry in which she works.

Since I obviously don’t know Miley personally, I can’t speak as to what she is doing. All I can say is that it all seems rather “forced” and disingenuous to me. I am all for people doing whatever they want with their bodies. The thing is, it should be your choice to do those things.

O’ Connor’s message was one that I think a lot of people should read. It is one that states the obvious, that you should be the one in charge of your choices and not let others dictate what they want from you as they obscure the amazing person that you are.
