Artist Spotlight: Exclusive Interview With The Elovay’s Frontman Xavier Brinkman

I have another awesome talent to share with you; Xavier Brinkman. He is a singer/songwriter and host of Balcony TV! If you are an LA pal you may have seen him playing as the frontman of his band called The Elovay.

When did you first realize you had a passion for music?
I was forced into learning piano at a young age, hated it and swapped over to guitar at the age of 10. Once I realized I could play along with songs on the radio I became obsessed with the thing and couldn’t put it down. I was never very good at remembering lyrics but that did not stop me from yelling my made up lyrics along with whatever I was listening to as a kid. Once I started jamming with friends in high school I got hooked on that “F#@K YEAH!” feeling and have been chasing it ever since.
What has been the most challenging part of being an artist?
The most challenging thing for me has been pulling an idea from my head, turning it into something and trying to make people care about it as much as I do. There are thousands of bands out there, and the challenge is making something you are damn proud of, and pushing it with absolute blind faith get to a point where someone will actually listen to you and appreciate it.
You have played at some iconic venues, what did that mean for you?
When I moved over to LA from Australia two years ago, my only real goal was to get a band together and play at the Viper Room and House Of Blues – both of which I had only ever seen in movies. It turned out that the HOB was the first venue we ever played and we’ve been fortunate enough to play the Viper Room several times since, so I was pretty content in the very beginning, the rest has been sugar on top!
What is the best advice you can give someone who is trying to follow in your footsteps?
If you want something done, do it yourself. The sooner you stop waiting on other people to help you take the necessary steps you need to take as a band, the quicker you’ll start achieving them, and probably the less likely you’ll be to punch your bass player.
If you could put together your dream tour, who would be the lineup?
I’d have to say Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age and Weezer – not a bad show!
What are your guilty pleasures and do you have any hidden talents?
Guilty pleasure would be contagious bubblegum pop songs, (T-Swift, Miley, Biebs – all the good stuff!) and usually accidentally singing them in places where I am supposed to be manly.
What music are you listening to right now?
Right now I am spinning Arctic Monkeys new album –AM!
Do you have any fan moments that stand out to you the most?
Honestly, the best moment I have had in my short career has been seeing people singing along with my songs! So bizarre to see people mouthing lyrics that I wrote in my bedroom months or years before about something personal to me, such an rewarding feeling.
What is your favorite city or country to perform in?
I do love playing in LA, it is a tough city to start out in. There are so many talented and creative people here so being able to connect with the most discerning of crowds is a feeling you just can’t beat! getting a warm response definitely means a lot!
