Feeding You Music: Saves The Day

My mission is to always give you a well balanced diet of music, so allow me to feed you music.

In 2002 a friend suggested I listen to Saves The Day’s Stay What You Are and it changed the way I listened to music. The opening song to that album, “At Your Funeral,” told a vivid story sung by a young Chris Conley who had a very *sharp tongue. This man, like all great songwriters, has a way with words. There’s a lot of imagery and a lot of anger, but to a melody that made me dance. This response would continue for the rest of the album — and any other release I could get my hands one.

*Just how sharp can his tongue be? Lyrics from, “Rocks Tonic Juice Magic” below.

I’d buy you lemonade right now

if you were here

But then I’d throw it in your face

And I’d listen to you cry

Now since the bands’ inception in the late 90s, Saves The Day has put out 8 studio albums, including one that came just a few weeks ago. I think it’s important for me to discuss Saves The Day with you, because Chris Conley was a pioneer in the punk/emo/pop (however you want to try and label it) scene and still contiunes to captivate fans. The same way my parents made sure I was aware of Fleetwood Mac as a young music fan, I think Saves The Day is important for this generation of music listener’s to get into. Music fans my age (mid to late 20s) still acknowledge the huge impact Saves The Day had, but I want YOU (mid teen-early 20s) music fans to dig into their catalogue. There’s a lot to love and the music you start to listen at this point in you life will stay with you forever …. trust me. #musicrules.

Now some facts about Saves The Day to get you acquainted.

The band has had over 14 different members always aligned with front man Chris Conley. There were always rumors he wasn’t the easiest to get along with back in the day, but I really have no idea if that’s really the case. The current lineup features Dennis Wilson who used to be the drummer for Every Avenue.

Their first release, Can’t Slow Down, was recorded while they were still in high school. (1998)

They have been attached to several different labels, Razor & Tie, Vagrant, DreamWorks and Equal Vision. They just released their self-titled album on Equal Vision a few weeks ago.

Although a lot of Chris Conley’s lyrics can be dark and aggressive; he also has an ability to write incredibly romantic songs. See “Nightingale” and “Handsome Boy.”

They have a few music videos to give you a visual.

And here’s a playlist with a few essentials to get you started. I hope you guys find something to love here and let me know what you think in the comments.
