10 Tips for Naturally Staying Alert With Little Sleep

As humans, we tend to become very busy, at times, which gives us less time to sleep and sometimes we just can’t sleep at night. The next busy day comes and we are extremely tired. Avoid drinking energy drinks and eating very sugary foods. Instead, use these 10 easy, natural, tips to staying awake, alert, and ready on busy days when you have had little sleep the night before.

1. Be in a Bright Enviroment

Avoid staying in a dim environment because dimness tends to make people sleepier and more relaxed. Instead, try to make the enviroment very bright. Studies have shown that being in a bright environment will tend to make you more alert and less sleepy.

2. Stay Hydrated

When you are low on sleep, make sure to stay very hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. Dehydration tends to cause fatigue and has a negative affect by causing exhaustion. Also, eat foods high in liquid, such as fruits and vegetables. Staying very hydrated will also cause you to use the bathroom about every 30 minutes, so there will be no time for sleeping.

3. Get Plenty of Excercise

Since exercising can raise your energy levels, try exercising about 30 minutes a day. University of Georgia researchers found in 70 studies including 6,800 people that medicine used to treat sleep deprivation was less affective in increasing fatigue and boosting energy.

4. Listen to Music

Listening to fast beat music or your favorite artist will really help keep you awake, if it is not too much of a distraction. Try listening to music on your IPod, computer, or the radio. If you don’t want to bother others around you, listen to music through your headphones.

5. Place Cold Spoons on Your Eyes

Something that really helps wake me up in the morning is putting cold spoons on my eyes. This sounds weird, but it really works! Before you go to bed at night, put two spoons in the freezer. The next morning, take them out ,ly down, and place the round back of the spoon on your eyes. This really helps wake you up in the morning and it helps tighten the bags under your eyes from little sleep.

6. Turn Up the AC

If you are in a lecture hall or a meeting room, try to find an open seat under the air conditioner. Cold air will help keep you awake and alert, since warm air tends to cause fatigue. If you are in a office, try bringing a portable fan that you can plug in and aim in your direction.

7. Listen to Music

Listening to fast beat music or your favorite artist will really help keep you awake, if it is not too much of a distraction. Try listening to music on your IPod, computer, or the radio. If you don’t want to bother others around you, listen to music through your headphones.

8. Use Cold Water

Whenever you wake up in the morning or when you start to feel very drowsy, a great way to wake yourself up is by splashing cold water into your face. If you don’t want to mess up your makeup, place cold water on the pulse area of your wrists.

9. Chew Gum

Chewing gum is a very good way to stay awake since this will keep your jaw moving. This will generate just enough physical activity to keep you awake. Try chewing on a strong tasting flavor of gum that will keep you awake, such a peppermint.

10. Avoid Leaning Against Your Desk

In the past, when I was at school, I would fall asleep by laying my head on the desk and by leaning my head against my arm. Avoid doing this because you will most likely start falling asleep. Instead, when sitting down, try having good posture. This will help keep you alert and less likely to fall asleep. Also, keep your eyes wide open so that they won’t begin to glaze over.

Even when our schedules get very busy, try to get as much sleep as possible even, though sometimes we just can’t get as much as we would like to. When possible, try not to do too much in one day so that you can leave room for sleeping.

I really hope these tips help keep you alert and ready for a busy day!

Katelyn
