The Most Fabulous 90-Year-Old in the World

There’s something wonderful to me about women advanced in years who do not see their age as a reason to tone down their passion for extravagant clothes and design, and no one fits the bill better than Iris Apfel.

Apfel is an interior designer and revered style icon who is 90 – 90! – and still really, truly, incredibly fabulous. Known for her trademark giant round glasses and her colorful, lavish ensembles, she has been in design since the 40s, serving as an interior decorator at the White House for nine presidents.

You may recognize her from her line for Mac cosmetics called Iris for Mac, which launched this January (Mac and I seem to have similar taste, as they’ve also recently collaborated with two other style icons I’ve blogged about, Daphne Guiness and Miss Piggy), or a New Yorker might have seen an exhibition comprised of Apfel’s clothing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2005. Or perhaps you saw her when she was the star of a 2008 Coach campaign, or in Italian Vogue in 2007…? The list goes on and on.

Here are photos of her home designs, her clothing exhibit at the Met, and, of course, Iris herself. I want to be her when I’m 90!
