TUTORIAL: getting the vhs/tv effect in photoshop
this tutorial requires basic knowledge of photoshop!!!
alrighty i see a lot of people wondering how the fuck you do this, so i’m going to try my best to put together a simple enough tutorial for my method of getting the effect.
USING KAVINSKY AND HIS PRETTY FACE AS MY WILLING TEST SUBJECT, we’re going to turn this:
hay bb how u doin
now i’m using a photo for this tutorial, but you CAN use it for art(shit’s real useful if you’re drawing danger fanart lolol)it just might take a little bit of adjustment and experimentation til you find what you like. remember i only know how to do this because i experimented in PS until i got an effect i liked, so E X P E R I M E N T and you’ll probably come up with something that looks better than the way i do it lolol
OK EVERYBODY READY HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS LETS GO
frst you’ll want to open up photoshop of course…i’m using photoshop CS2, so sorry if you have a different version and this tut doesnt work for you 🙁 you should be able to figure it out on your own though CAUSE YOU A SMART COOKIE LIKE THAT
so we have PS open w/our manly as fuck test subject staring at us impatiently
what a hunk i hope his anus is prepared for me to photoshop him so hard
FIRST STEP: duplicate your original/background layer 3 TIMES
STEP 2: we’re going to change the three layers we just created into exclusion mode
do this for all three copy layers!!!
if you have those top 3 layers all set to exclusion mode, your image should look like this:
STEP 3: now we’re going to fuck with some LEVELS.
on your first copy layer, go to »IMAGE»ADJUSTMENTS»LEVELS
the dropdown menu doesnt show up when i take a screenshot but just click in there and you’ll find it
this little window will show up next:
so what we’re going to do is change the red, green, and blue output levels for each layer. on the top layer, “copy 3”, we’re going to change the red output level to 0
on the second layer, “copy 2”, we’re going to change the green output level
and on the first copy layer, we’re going to change the blue output level
so if you did that right, your little layer thumbnails will look like this:
notice that colorful action goin on in there
STEP 4: ok, this is where the fun stuff starts!! what you’re going to do is move the copy layers around and just position them pretty much wherever you like.
when you move “copy 3”, you’ll see something like this:
kavinskys dick IN 3-DDDD
next, moving “copy 2” a bit will give you this:
and finally, moving the first copy layer will do this:
basically you’re just going to position them wherever you think they look good. remember you can always go back and change the positioning if you want.
now obviously, the image is really obscured now and we can’t see the k-man’s HANDSOME AND MANLY FACE, so you’re going to take your original layer and move it on top of everything and lower the opacity a bit.
i have the opacity set at 70%, but you can do what you think looks best
STEP 5: now go to »LAYER»FLATTEN IMAGE because we’re done with that part!!
and duplicate the layer because PS is a cock and makes the layer locked when you flatten it
you can delete the locked background layer you wont need it
STEP 6: time to add some noise
create a new blank layer and fill it with a gray color, doesn’t really matter too much how dark it is.
TODAY THERE IS NO BLACK OR WHITE ONLY SHADES OF GRAAAAY
now go to »FILTER»NOISE»ADD NOISE
you can use either monochromatic noise or colored noise, i like to use colored. the amount of noise you use depends entirely on your personal preference. i set it at about 30-40%.
next set that new noise layer to SOFT LIGHT mode and lower the opacity to around 15%.
this next bit is optional, but i like the way it looks so if you want you can sharpen your background layer by going to »FILTER»SHARPEN»SHARPEN. it just gives the image a little bit of a crisp pop to it so i decided to do it.
STEP 7: this part can be a little tricky so be careful. using the rectangular select tool on the bottom layer(the background layer), select a portion of the image like so
now right click above your selection and click “Layer via Cut”
this cuts out what you just selected and sticks it on a new layer.
now on this new layer you just created, go to »FILTER»DISTORT»SHEAR and this window will pop up:
now adjust the little squares and lines to match what i have here and click OK
and WOAH NELLY WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT:
vhs-lookin errors all up in this bitch
now create a new layer and with the pencil tool set at 1 pt, draw a light gray line on that edge that you just created and set the layer to overlay
STEP 8: now we’re gonna do some SCANLINES
this part is really easy, just take this image:
and copy and paste it all over until you cover the image with it, then just merge all the copied and pasted layers together and set that layer to overlay and then go to »FILTER»BLUR»GAUSSIAN BLUR and blur it by about 1.5
STEP 9: next create another new layer and using the gradient tool, just put a ~random~ rainbow gradient on it, set the layer to overlay, and lower the opacity to 10%
you can skip this step if you want but i think it gives the image a nice subtle coloration to it.
STEP 10: go to »LAYER»FLATTEN IMAGE and finally »FILTER»SHARPEN
and we’re done!!
now that wasnt so hard, was it??
here’s a link to the tutorial that i used to start myself off using this method, maybe you’ll learn some more from it:
