How Does ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Fare? Buzznet Reviews!

Buzznet’s Patty and Amy attended the screening of Captain America: The First Avenger held at Paramount Studios in Hollywood as well as the junket where they found out 10 juicy facts from the stars of Captain America: The First Avenger.

The superhero, comic book-based film boasts an all-star cast with Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Sebastian Stan as James ‘Bucky’ Barnes, Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Philips, and Hugo Weaving as Johann Schmidt/The Red Skull. Set in the World War II era, Steve Rogers, an aspiring army soldier, becomes part of an experiment that turns him into a super-soldier after being injected with super-soldier serum. He then becomes Captain America, helping his country fight against the Nazis.

How did the movie fare?

What Patty Thought:

Patty says: Like most of the comic book movies, Captain America: The First Avenger is definitely a movie particularly for the guy’s eye. 90% of the cast is male – Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) is the lone female main character amongst a cast of males. However, that being said, the character of Peggy is a total badass and is a true role model for females. This movie is definitely one that both sexes could enjoy, whether the ladies go with the males in her life (friends, boyfriends, brothers) or her female friends. Males will love the testosterone infused action sequences and Peggy’s gorgeous red dress (look for it!) and females will love the 1940s fashion, the headstrong and gorgeous character that is Peggy and the hotness that is Chris Evans – ’nuff said!

Bottom Line: The movie could be a little cheesy at times, but the pace of the movie was just right. At times one would think that the movie was over and had you thinking, “That’s it?!” But that wasn’t the case – it was still going! The best part of the film would have to be the end, which gives a bit of a twist and the perfect cliffhanger for The Avengers film.

What Amy Thought:

Amy says: With a new super hero movie coming out seemingly every week these days, I am very cautious of which ones I go and see. Have no fear, you don’t have to worry about this one. Captain America: The First Avenger is a great tribute to the classic Marvel hero. The film stands on its own but you can feel the history of the classic comic shine through. Much like Spider-Man’s Peter Parker, Captain America’s Steve Rogers is the ultimate underdog with the heart of gold.

It’s a mix of history and fantasy, WWII and modern day. The villain is Red Skull, the juiced up Nazi played by Hugo Weaving. The story is a clear cut case of good versus evil with a dash of love and a splash of synergized corporate franchise. There are multiple references to the upcoming “Avengers” movie with nods to both “Thor” and “Iron Man”.

As far as superhero movies go, so far I have found the Marvel produced projects to be much more consistently good (sans Daredevil). Although I have found with the recent lesser known comic movies like “Thor” and “Captain America” I am regretting the entire film that I don’t know more about the original comics. Not that you will be confused without prior knowledge, I just like to be in on all of the inside jokes (harumph.)

Bottom Line: This would be a great compromise for the couple out there looking for something to do on a Friday night. The ladies get to look at Chris Evan’s pecs all night while the dudes get all the action they always want!

Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22nd.
