THE FIRST CHRYSALIS OF THE SEVEN CATERPILLARS ……….
My first Black Swallowtail caterpillar is in it’s resting state [Pupa] now so now it begins it’s journy to become a beautiful Butterfly !!! Three more of the caterpillars are finished eating and now getting into thier position to pupate and will eventually look like this also. They may become green like this one or a Tanish grey color. This particular caterpillar can actually change the color of their chrysalis to make them blend into their environment by what color they see before they change. It protects them from predators since this stage of the life cycle is the most fragile. If you look at this on full size you can see two threads holding the chrysalis that’s called a girdle the caterpillar forms this to hang in this position. I put this chrysalis on the pin after it completed this process : )
