Bonnaroo Day 3: Mumford and Sons’ Sea of Fans, Wiz Khalifa’s Smokin’ Set, and More

Not to be outdone by Thursday or Friday, Saturday brought out its most blazing heat and humidity, effectively further ripening the Bonnaroo crowd, many of whom had yet to shower since their arrival on the grounds on Wednesday. Bikini-clad girls and shirtless boys milled about, idly tossing frisbees and shimmying in hula hoops, until almost unconsciously beckoned by the strains of a new act taking one of the stages. Armed with anti-bacterial hand-sanitizer and a steely demeanor, I summoned up my best Jane Goodall and took to the crowds. Here were the highlights of Day 3:

WIZ KHALIFA

Feel-good rapper Wiz Khalifa took the What Stage in a cloud of smoke, greeted by screaming like-minded fans who surrounded themselves in white smoke in a show of solidarity. His new gal pal, Amber Rose, was watching and cheering him on from the wings, and he even gave her a shout-out during his set.

MUMFORD & SONS

Mumford & Sons drew a veritable ocean of people to the Which Stage, packed tightly and and practically spilling over into the other stages it spread so far out. This biggest crowd I’d seen yet sang along to every single Mumford song, swaying to the mandolin and banjo stylings of the Grammy-nominated British rock band. In related news, my mother is also a huge fan, and sings along to “Lion Man” in her car regularly.

EMINEM

The artist formerly known for fart jokes and inappropriate jabs at pop stars played a decidedly earnest set to a slew of Bonnaroo fans at 1am on the What Stage. Slim Shady is all grown up, but his intensity hasn’t diminished, and he definitely brought the heat for a fiery one hour long set that had more butts shaking than a Sir Mix A Lot video. Em was even joined by longtime collaborator Royce Da 5’9″ for two songs, and ended his slaying set with an encore performance of “Lose Yourself” while the crowd chanted his name.
