Lupe Fiasco Reveals He Was On The Brink Of Suicide While Recording The New Album

Lupe Fiasco is getting ready to release his latest studio album, the highly-anticipated Lasers – but not without a confession about what really went down in the recording process. While on a promotional run for the new album, Lupe revealed to The Guardian that while working on the record, he toyed with the idea of suicide – especially after recording the original “Nothin’ On You,” which eventually became a hit for labelmates Bruno Mars and B.O.B. Lupe had originally recorded the hit song, but the Atlantic Records chairman had told him that the verses and his overall performance on the track was “wack.”

“That was the tipping point. It was less about the bruised ego but more the audacity of it. It was mentally destructive. I say it with a certain laissez-faire now because I’m past it, but back then, hearin’ that s**t, it f**ked me up. I was super-depressed, lightly suicidal, at moments medium suicidal – and if not suicidal, willing to just walk away from it all completely.”

Whoooooa. Sad face.

That wasn’t the first time Atlantic had shunned Lupe: Last year, Atlantic shelved his album – that is, until Lupe’s fans delivered a petition of no less than 30,000 signatures to their offices. He finally received a release date, however, through all the blood, sweat and tears that he’d put getting it released, he confesses that he hates it.

I hate this album. I don’t hate the music, but I hate the process. When I look at it, I don’t see song titles and artwork, I see the fight – I see the emotions, the blood, sweat and tears. There are a couple of songs on there that I love; but Lasers is a little bit of what you love, a little bit of what you like, and a lot of what you had to do.

Here’s the original version, with Lupe on it:

What do you think of Lupe’s version of “Nothin’ On You”? Do you dig his or B.O.B.’s take better?
