Gerard Way Gives Fans More of What To Expect From the New Album

My Chemical Romance is supposedly headed back to the studio sometime soon (“after the holidays” is how they put it before) in order to record their fourth studio album. But what can we expect to hear from MCR? After all, the band members have gone through major changes since The Black Parade (4 out of 5 of them are married, and at least one of them has sperminated his wife), what changes are we going to see musically?

SERIOUSLY, MY CHEM, I NEED NEW PICTURES OF YOU GUYS, OKAY?

Well, we now know that the new My Chem album will be different from the others in at least one major way: it will not follow a concept.

My Chemical Romance’s albums have traditionally indulged Gerard Way‘s story telling abilities. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was supposedly a story about a pair of lovers running from the law and fighting for their lives. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge continued that story, with the man attempting to reunite with his lover by bringing the Devil the souls of 1,000 evil men (realizing only at the end that his soul was the 1,000th). And of course, The Black Parade was the story of The Patient as he dies (or possibly doesn’t, as Gerard later made the statement that The Patient had lived).

So going with a non-concept album is a pretty new thing for the band. But wait, haven’t we heard this all before? Even Gerard admits, “I said that during [2006’s] Welcome To The Black Parade, but I still think I had something to work out. I think I had to get it out of my system, as far as writing concept records.”

He does go on to say ” Obviously, [the albums]’ll always be cohesive. The songs need to fit together, that’s what makes a great album.”

Add this to the information we already have: that the sound will be more raw and sound closer to their live show (Gerard says “I think it’d be interesting to hear what the band sounds like recorded at least somewhat in those parameters of a live set.”) and that Gerard’s recent lyrics have been very angry. So it sounds like this album is shaping up to be about as different from The Black Parade as possible. And hey, maybe Gerard is getting his story telling out of his system these days while working on The Umbrella Academy!
