Buzznet Community Review: “The Ballad of Jonathan Crane” by Mikey Way

At long last, the DC Universe Halloween Special, featuring an 8 page story by My Chemical Romance bassist Mikey Way, has hit news shelves.

Mikey’s story, “The Ballad of Jonathan Crane,” is a short story featuring Batman and the Scarecrow displaced into the town of Sleepy Hollow. Now, I’m a sucker for any kind of story that sets comic characters in historical settings (Marvel 1602, written by Neil Gaiman, is one of those comics I urge even non-comic fans to read), and had really high hopes for this.

In only 8-pages, Mikey managed to satisfy what I was looking for. Actually, in a single page he managed to completely surprise me with the inclusion of another Batman universe character. I refuse to spoil it for you, but let’s just say there’s a great scene at a masked ball that you should keep your eyes open for!

The rest of the issue is worth it as well, with Halloween themed stories featuring Superman, The Green Lantern/Kyle Rayner, Felix Faust and even Vixen. The whole thing is “hosted” by the ghosts of Elongated Man Ralph Dibny and his wife Sue.

All in all? A great start for Mikey’s comic career and an fantastic issue all around!

Have you read the issue? What are your thoughts?
